Sunrise, Maxfield Parrish, 1933.
At first glance, Sunrise feels like an escape into an impossible world. But Maxfield Parrish created it for a General Electric calendar in 1933.
That may be part of its charm: commercial illustration gave him a reason to build fantasy with absolute precision. Here, even a product commission becomes a place that feels almost too beautiful to belong to the real world.
I love this artwork by Richard Clifton-Dey! First used as interior illustration in 'Tour of the Universe' by Malcolm Edwards and Robert Holdstock, but more well known for a few album covers.
