The men thrown from the bridge at the Portadown massacre were not statistics. They were Protestant men, women and children, driven into the River Bann by rebels in 1641, with many shot as they tried to crawl back to safety. It became one of the bloodiest massacres of Protestants in Northern Ireland, and it burned itself into the memory of Ulster Protestants for generations.

When Oliver Cromwell came to Ireland years later, he did not arrive in a vacuum. He came after years of rebellion, slaughter, and fear, with Portadown standing as a symbol of what many English and Scottish Protestants believed had been done to their people. Many saw his campaign as vengeance and protection, not conquest alone. History should be told honestly: Portadown mattered, and it shaped everything that followed.
