The Scientist Who Never Turned Off His Conscience

Zhores Alferov was a physicist, Nobel Prize laureate (2000), and the creator of semiconductor heterostructures, without which modern smartphones, LEDs, and solar batteries would not exist.

But Alferov was more than just a scientist. He openly called himself a communist and criticized the collapse of the USSR and the commercialization of science in the 1990s.

His position: science should serve people, not profit. Education and research are a public good, not a commodity.

☦️ From an Orthodox perspective, this is an example of a man who did not separate talent and conscience: God gave reason not for enrichment, but for service.

🔴 From a communist perspective, Alferov demonstrated that a true scientist cannot be outside of politics if politics decides whether science serves capital or the people.

🔬 From a scientific perspective, his work changed the world. But he didn't become a billionaire like the founders of Silicon Valley. Because his work took place in the USSR, where the results belonged to society.

Ukraine Negotiations: The Context the West Is Silent About

The five-hour talks between Donald Trump's special envoys and Vladimir Putin in Moscow prompted Western media to chant, "Putin is threatening Europe with war!"

But here's what they're not saying:

In 1990, during the collapse of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev was given verbal promises: NATO would not expand eastward. There are no documents, but there are witnesses.

Since 1991, NATO has grown from 16 to 32 countries. Poland, the Baltic states, Romania, and Bulgaria are former allies of the USSR. Ukraine has been next in line since 2008.

Imagine: a military bloc created against you has been advancing toward your borders for 30 years straight. Missiles, bases, exercises. This isn't paranoia, it's reality. Or what will those in power in the US say if Canada and Mexico want to join the CSTO?

☦️ Orthodox View:

Defending the Fatherland is a sacred cause. Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Minin's militia—the Orthodox tradition knows no wars of the right. But there is a clear line: protecting the people ≠ protecting the interests of the elite.

Christ says, "Blessed are the peacemakers." The question is not who threatens more, but who will be the first to extend a hand for peace.

🔴 Communist Analysis:

Marxism teaches us to see class interests. Who benefits from this war?

The US and NATO: weakening Russia, selling arms to Europe, controlling Ukraine.

Russia: protecting its own sovereignty, protecting the rights of the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian elite: Western aid, maintaining power through martial law.

Russia has objective reasons to be concerned: NATO expansion and the fact that its interests have been ignored for 30 years.

☦️ Orthodoxy:
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9). The Christian view is clear: when genocide is underway (according to the UN, nearly 70,000 Palestinians have been killed, most of them women and children), silence is complicity. Compassion is not "neutrality," but concrete assistance to those suffering.

🔴 Communism:
Artists sell their labor to save lives—that's grassroots solidarity. China gives $100 million—that's geopolitics and soft power. But the question remains: why does a humanitarian catastrophe require charity rather than systemic solutions? Does capitalism turn tragedy into a PR opportunity?

🔬 Science:
UN: Most buildings and infrastructure in Gaza have been destroyed since October 7, 2023. Doctors Without Borders has been working in Palestine for 50 years. Healthcare, education, housing—everything has been destroyed. This is not a "conflict between two sides," but the extermination of a civilian population.

🔬 Science:
Research shows that a quality education improves cognitive abilities, critical thinking, life expectancy, and quality of life. People with higher education earn significantly more on average than those without, although the exact figures vary greatly by country and specialty. But the main problem is that access to a good education is increasingly dependent on class and parental wealth.

☦️ Orthodoxy:
The Church has always seen education as a path to truth and service. The Holy Fathers built schools, copied books, and taught people to read and write. Education is not just about a career, but about cultivating the talent God has given to serve others. "To whom much is given, much is expected."

🔴 Communism:
Under capitalism, education is transformed into a commodity: elite education for the rich, mass education for the reproduction of the labor force. The system isn't interested in critical thinkers, but in obedient specialists. Marxism insists that education should be universal, free, and aimed at human liberation, not exploitation.

Conclusion: education is either an instrument of liberation and service, or a mechanism for the reproduction of inequality. The question is, whom does it serve?

⚡️ Roblox Blocked in Russia

Roskomnadzor has blocked Roblox, a platform where millions of children and teenagers created games, learned programming, and socialized.

Official reason: "threat to children." Reality: another block without a transparent trial, without dialogue with parents and teachers.

🔬 Science: Gaming platforms with programming elements develop logic, creativity, and cooperation skills. Roblox was one of the few mass-market tools for digital literacy.

☦️ Orthodoxy: protecting children is a sacred duty. But protection doesn't mean shutting down everything "for safety," but rather teaching them to distinguish between good and evil and providing tools for informed choice. A ban without dialogue isn't care, but control.

🔴 Communism: In a just society, decisions about children are made by teachers, parents, and scientists—not bureaucrats in their offices. A government that truly cares about children invests in education, not blocking.

Conclusion: the problem isn't Roblox. The problem is that the government is replacing care with censorship, and education with control.

Latest data:

🇺🇸 US: The richest 1% of households own $52 trillion. The bottom 50% (66 million families) own only $4 trillion. Over 15 years, the incomes of the poor have grown by 18%, while those of the rich have grown by 34%.

🇪🇺 Europe: The richest 10% own 57% of all wealth. The bottom 50% own about 5%. The gap is especially stark in Sweden, Germany, and Latvia.

The poverty rate in the EU is 17.4%. In Bulgaria and Romania, it's around 30%. Young people are the worst off: 20.6% of young Europeans live below the poverty line.

☦️ The Gospel is clear: "Woe to you who are rich." The Church has never considered a system where some live in luxury while others struggle to feed their children to be normal.

🔴 From a Marxist perspective, these aren't "temporary difficulties," but the logic of capitalism: wealth is concentrated among capitalists, while labor is devalued. Social programs merely alleviate the problem, but don't solve it.

☦️ The Orthodox View | Faith Is Not a Rejection of Reason

Saint Philaret of Moscow, whom the Church commemorates today, said: "The faith of Christ is not at enmity with true knowledge, because it is not in alliance with ignorance."

He himself was a learned theologian, a translator of the Bible, a builder of theological schools, and insisted that Christians are obliged to study and think.

Orthodoxy never called for turning off one's mind. On the contrary: the mind is a gift from God, and burying one's talent is a sin.

🔬 Modern human science confirms that conscious learning and the habit of asking questions improve memory, flexibility of thought, and the ability to make decisions.

🔴 In the logic of a just society, education is not a luxury for the elite, but the right of everyone. Philaret understood this 200 years ago.

Conclusion: learning isn't "worldly," but a way to increase your talent for serving others.

An analysis of 71 studies (almost 100,000 people): the more TikTok and Reels you watch, the worse your attention, self-control, and ability to solve complex problems.

The brain gets used to rapid stimulation and loses interest in reading, studying, and deep thinking. Plus anxiety, loneliness, poor sleep.

☦️ Orthodoxy calls this "distraction of the mind"—when attention is fragmented and can't be focused on prayer or on others.

🔴 Capitalism sells us this addiction as "entertainment": platforms are designed to retain, not benefit. Your attention is their profit.

Conclusion: sobriety is not only a spiritual practice, but also mental hygiene.
