3️⃣ months away…
When Braden Smith committed to Purdue in April 2021, I went to YouTube to watch his highlights and the first video below was at the top.
It starts off with a pair of Zionsville players, ahead of their sectional game with Westfield, referring to Smith (a junior at the time) as “rat boy”. Knowing what we know now about Smith’s competitiveness, that might as well have been a death wish.
Smith put 23 points and 8 assists on them, while playing on a broken foot, and led Westfield to its first ever sectional title, 61-47.
Video #2, also filmed by IncTapes, was watched shortly after and has Braden narrating the start. He had missed their game earlier in the season against Fishers while recovering from surgery on his broken foot.
Fishers won that game and Smith talks about them pressing while up 25 points.
Westfield ended up beating Fishers 62-44 the second time around, with Smith pouring in 28 points and 11 assists.
It honestly feels like yesterday that I was watching these videos. A player with the competitive streak & win-at-all-costs mentality of Braden Smith is rare and it’s a huge reason why he’s a lot of ours’ favorite player ever.
Opposing fans, please keep telling him that he can’t win a national title 🙏😏.
