I've been saying it before and I will say it again, Upsells in checkout, and post checkout are just different!
They work because you get the users when their purchasing intent is at the highest.

@hunkybill I'm sure chat GPT helped them as English isn't their first language, But we did do A/B tests on the conversions with free giveaways and a 70% off product, and a few other experiments like that through our managed CRO services. You're right about us having great merchants tho.
