For years, we have cautioned the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and the Government of India that allowing near-monopoly control in the civil aviation sector would ultimately compromise passenger safety, burden pilots and crew, and strengthen private airlines at the cost of public interest. The current collapse of operations at IndiGo proves those concerns. Despite being fully aware of the DGCA’s revised rest-period rules for pilots and crew, the airline expanded its flight schedule instead of preparing sufficient staffing. This reckless decision triggered widespread cancellations and delays, turning airports into scenes of chaos, with passengers, including those travelling for medical or urgent needs, left without clear information or assistance.

The crisis has deepened due to regulatory inaction. The DGCA introduced new duty-hour norms to enhance safety, but it failed to ensure that the largest airline should comply with these requirements. Rather than intervening, the regulator looked away even as crew shortages and rostering failures worsened. The complete privatisation of Air India has also removed the public-sector buffer that earlier provided stability. With no meaningful government oversight, private airlines have been free to expand aggressively, overwork staff, and impose arbitrarily high fares, placing the burden entirely on passengers and aviation workers. Pilots and crew now face exhausting schedules, while passengers are forced to endure long hours in overcrowded terminals without proper support.

The CPI demands that the DGCA and the Ministry of Civil Aviation act immediately and transparently. They must ensure full compliance with safety and rest regulations, hold the airline accountable for operational failures, and provide timely compensation and proper facilities for stranded passengers, including assistance with rebooking, accommodation and essential services. The government must also reassess policies that have enabled such monopolistic conditions and restore effective public oversight in the aviation sector. Our aviation system must protect passengers and workers, not serve as a vehicle for unchecked corporate profiteering.
