Netflix’s Mother’s Day presentation—”Remarkably Bright Creatures”—is an earnest appeal to set aside your world-weary cynicism for a couple of hours. And it succeeds. Directed by Olivia Newman from Shelby Van Pelt’s novel of the same name, the film pulls just the right heartstrings for catharsis without getting sappy. The ending takes a slightly doe-eyed leap toward perfected optimism. Still, when an octopus helps two humans bond, a bit of far-fetched hope feels warranted.

A remake of the 2021 Norwegian dark-comedy thriller “The Trip,” “Over Your Dead Body” is one mean-spirited joyride, peppering every attack on your moral fibre with the right kind of dark humor. The outrageous nature of the Jorma Taccone directorial could remind one of the absolute bonkers “Treehouse of Horror” segments from “The Simpsons.” Despite taking some preposterous leaps, the Jason Segel-Samara Weaving starrer simply works.
In a steadfast attempt to sound smart, the Amazon Prime legal thriller “System,” starring Sonakshi Sinha and Jyotika, fails to be smart. The film is a rare misstep by director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari.

With films like “Bareilly Ki Barfi” and “Nil Battey Sannata,” director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari has already demonstrated her ability to craft an entertaining mainstream Bollywood film that also stands out for its strong storytelling and smart screenplay. Understandably, her foray into a legal thriller with her latest film intrigued me. However, the Sonakshi Sinha- and Jyotika-starrer “System” would probably go down as a misstep in Tiwari’s filmography, as it tries to juggle multiple themes and drops the proverbial ball at almost every turn, largely because of the clunky execution of a convoluted script.

The Magic Faraway Tree, with an earnestly good Andrew Garfield, is a little too unimaginative despite having highly imaginative tools. It might work strictly as a kids’ movie.

Based on Enid Blyton’s fantasy series of the same name, “The Magic Faraway Tree” uses its manipulative (and I mean that almost as a compliment) charm to draw you into the adventure. With a screenplay by Simon Farnaby (“Wonka”) and direction from Ben Gregor, the film has plenty in its favour, even if ingenuity is not one of them. A steadfastly committed adult cast (especially Andrew Garfield), a few whimsically eye-catching moments, and the lure of the British countryside almost compel you to come along despite being fully familiar with the drab twists and turns of this joyride.
Remarkably Bright Creatures, Netflix’s adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s best-selling novel of the same name, is a poignant rendition by director Olivia Newman, buoyed by the warmth of Sally Field’s central performance.

With a committed Marisa Tomei and a strong female lens, “You’re Dating a Narcissist!” is just the right amount of zany and clever to work.
