๐จ๐ 4 RECENT UPDATES CANADIANS SHOULD KNOW โ SEPTEMBER 8, 2026 ๐๐จ
A few federal changes could affect taxpayers, families and businesses. Hereโs the simple version. ๐ฒ๐
โฟ 1๏ธโฃ Disability Tax Credit
As of today, CRA no longer accepts Form T2201 versions from before 2023. For paper applications, use a 2023-or-newer form. New DTC applications should not go through โSubmit documentsโ unless CRA specifically asks for more information.
๐ 2๏ธโฃ SimpleFile
CRA is sending September invitations to eligible lower-income Canadians with simple 2025 tax situations who still need to file. Some eligible people may also be able to use SimpleFile Digital without an invitation.
โฝ 3๏ธโฃ Federal fuel excise-tax relief
The federal fuel excise-tax suspension on gasoline and diesel has been extended through Jan. 31, 2027. Half of the regular federal rate is scheduled to apply from Feb. 1 through Mar. 31, 2027.
๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ 4๏ธโฃ CanadaโU.S. counter-tariffs
Effective today, Canada imposed 15%, 25% and 50% counter-tariffs on specified U.S.-origin goods covering about $27.6 billion in imports. These are targeted tariffsโnot a tariff on every U.S. productโand they may affect some prices and business costs.

๐๐ฒ A good reminder that filing late doesnโt mean you should keep putting it off.
If your tax return is late, your benefit and credit payments may be delayed until CRA assesses your return. If you owe tax, filing late can also result in a late-filing penalty. ๐

๐๐ A very important reminder. Your CRA account is worth checking regularlyโnot just during tax season.
CRA sends email notifications when important account changes are made, including changes to your address or direct deposit information. If you receive a notification about a change you didnโt authorize, contact CRA immediately. Also take a moment to check your account for changes or activity you donโt recognize. ๐ฒ๐

๐ฅพ๐ฒ PENNY ON THE TAX TRAIL โ RETIREMENT TRAIL #3 ๐ท๐ค๐ฆ
๐จ๐ฆ OAS โ Old Age Security: What is it, who qualifies, and how do you get it?
Penny the PiggyBank is back on the trail with another question for Ollie!
๐ค Penny asks:
โOllie, what is OAS and how do Canadians apply for it?โ
๐ฆ Ollie:
โFirst, OAS is different from CPP โ you don't need to have worked or contributed to it to qualify!โ
๐ What is OAS?
OAS is a monthly government pension available to eligible seniors aged 65 and older.
๐ Who can qualify?
Eligibility is based largely on age and how long you've lived in Canada, not your employment history. Different residency rules can apply depending on whether you're living inside or outside Canada.
โฐ When can you start?
OAS can begin at 65, or you can delay it up to age 70 for a higher monthly payment.
๐ฐ Is OAS taxable?
Yes. OAS is taxable income. Higher-income seniors may also have to repay some or all of their OAS through the OAS recovery tax (clawback) โ we'll cover that in detail at a later stop!
๐ป HOW DO YOU APPLY?
Some people are automatically enrolled and receive a letter from Service Canada.
If you're not automatically enrolled, you can apply through My Service Canada Account (MSCA) or use a paper application.
๐ก Don't assume OAS will simply start at 65. Check whether you've been automatically enrolled and take action if you need to apply.
๐ค Penny wants to know:
Did you know CPP and OAS have different eligibility rules?

๐๐ HEY PARENTS โ DO YOU HAVE A TEEN IN SCHOOL?
Hereโs a great opportunity to help them build real-world tax skills they can actually use. ๐ฒ๐
Starting September 1, Canadian middle and high school students and teachers can take part in the CRAโs Learn about your taxes competition. ๐ซ
๐ Participating schools can compete for a share of a $5,000 prize pot!
The competition runs from September 1 to October 16 and is designed to build studentsโ tax literacy and confidence.
CRAโs learning materials cover practical topics including:
๐ How Canadaโs tax system works
๐ฒ Starting a job, pay stubs and T4 slips
๐ Preparing and filing a basic tax return
๐ Deductions, tax credits and benefits
๐ฒ What happens after filing
๐ Saving for the future

These are useful skills for young Canadians to learn before that first paycheque and first tax return arrive. ๐จ๐ฆ๐ท

I verified the substance against current CRA guidance: late GST/HST returns with an amount owing can attract penalties, overdue balances can attract interest, and CRA says businesses that cannot pay in full should still address the outstanding return/payment situation. I also checked current CRA social usage; #CdnTax and #CdnBusiness are both actively being used in recent CRA posts.

๐จ๐ฆ CPP โ Canada Pension Plan: What is it, when can you start it, and HOW do you apply?
Penny the PiggyBank is back on the Retirement Trail with her microphone and another question for Ollie! ๐
๐ค Penny asks:
โOllie, what is CPP and how do Canadians apply for it?โ
๐ฆ Ollie:
โFirst thing to know โ CPP doesn't just show up. You need to apply!โ
๐ What is CPP?
CPP retirement pension provides monthly taxable income based partly on the contributions you made while working.
๐ Who can receive it?
Generally, you must be at least 60 and have made at least one valid CPP contribution.
๐ When can you start?
You can choose to begin CPP between ages 60 and 70. Starting earlier means a smaller monthly pension; delaying it increases the monthly amount.
๐ป HOW DO YOU APPLY?
For most people, the easiest way is online through My Service Canada Account (MSCA).
You can apply up to 12 months before the date you want your CPP retirement pension to begin.
๐ A paper application is also available through Service Canada, and some situations require you to apply by paper.
๐ก Why does this matter?
Choosing when to start CPP can affect your retirement income for years. Don't wait until retirement to start learning about your options.
๐ค Penny wants to hear from YOU!
Are you planning to take CPP at 60, 65, 70 โ or are you still deciding?

๐ CRA SCAM ALERT: Email Bombing ๐
Have you heard of email bombing?
This is when scammers may get access to part of your account information, make changes, and then flood your inbox with lots of unwanted emails so that you miss the real CRA account-change notifications.
What should you do?
โ Do not click links or reply to the unwanted emails
โ Sign in to your CRA account directly instead of using links in emails
โ Monitor your account and change your passwords regularly
โ Report suspicious activity to CRA if something does not look right
A good reminder: the CRA does not send emails asking you to reply with personal or financial information, and CRA emails should not ask you to click a link to enter that information.

๐๐ฒ 6 IMPORTANT TAX UPDATES BEFORE TAX SEASON ๐ฒ๐ท
Tax season is still months away, but several changes could affect 2026 returns or Canadians heading into 2027:
๐ 1. CRA PRE-FILLED RETURNS
Starting March 2027, CRA plans to offer pre-filled 2026 returns in CRA accounts for about 1 million eligible lower-income Canadians with simple tax situations. You still need to review and approve the information.
๐๏ธ 2. B.C. TAX CHANGES
For 2026, B.C.โs lowest personal tax rate is 5.60%, and the maximum B.C. tax reduction credit is $690.
๐ 3. LOWER FEDERAL RATE
The lowest federal tax rate for 2026 is 14% on taxable income up to $58,523.
๐ฐ 4. CPP CONTRIBUTIONS DROP IN 2027
Starting Jan. 1, 2027, the base CPP rate falls to 4.75% each for employees and employers. Additional CPP rates are unchanged.
๐ 5. NEW PSW TAX CREDIT
For 2026โ2030, eligible personal support workers may claim 5% of eligible earnings, up to $1,100 a year. Earnings from qualifying work in B.C., N.L. and N.W.T. are excluded from this federal credit.
๐ 6. BARE TRUST REPORTING
Certain reportable bare trusts may need to file a T3 for tax years ending on or after Dec. 31, 2026. Not every arrangement is affected.
๐ฒ Everyoneโs tax situation is different, and these changes may not all apply to you. Contact Q&A Tax Services to find out what applies to your situation.

๐ฌ WAITING FOR A LETTER FROM CRA? YOU MAY NEED TO CHECK ONLINE INSTEAD!
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is moving some Canadians who previously received paper correspondence to online mail in CRA My Account.
CRA began transitioning approximately 1.3 million individuals from paper to online mail in 2025 and expanded the initiative to an additional 249,000 individuals in May 2026.
โ ๏ธ Why does this matter?
If CRA has changed your correspondence preference to Electronic mail, most CRA correspondence will no longer arrive in your mailbox.
Instead, CRA will send you an email notification telling you that new mail is waiting in your CRA My Account.
That online mail can include important documents such as:
๐ Notices of Assessment
๐ Notices of Reassessment
๐ Benefit notices
๐ Adjustment notices
๐ Instalment reminders
๐ Some letters asking you for information or documents
Don't ignore those CRA email notifications. Some CRA correspondence can be time-sensitive.
โ Sign in to your CRA My Account
โ Make sure CRA has your current email address
โ Check your Correspondence preference
โ Check the Mail section of your account for anything you may have missed
๐ฌ Prefer paper mail?
CRA says you can change your Correspondence preference in My Account and choose paper instead.
One important note: some CRA correspondence cannot be delivered through My Account and will continue to be sent by paper mail.
And don't worry โ this change does not change how your benefits, credits or refunds are paid. If you receive payments by direct deposit, they will continue by direct deposit. If you receive eligible payments by mailed cheque, CRA says those cheques will continue to be mailed.

๐ Important clarification for home buyers across Canada!
While this CRA post highlights Ontario, the federal First-Time Home Buyers' GST/HST Rebate isn't just for Ontario.
๐ก Eligible first-time buyers across Canada may qualify for up to $50,000 back on the GST or federal portion of HST when buying, building or substantially renovating a qualifying first home.
Ontario has additional provincial relief, while provincial programs elsewhere can differ โ so check both the federal rebate AND what's available in your province. ๐จ๐ฆ

๐ A good reminder that CRA account security is a shared responsibility.
