The Pope is like your woke grandpa, the respect is unwavering, but when it comes to politics you can just tune them out. Do you really think conservative Catholics agreed with Pope Francis' politics? Do you think leftist Catholics agree with the Pope on marriage and abortion?
The process of waking up is interesting. It starts with a vague feeling that something is just not right with the world. And then something confirms, “yeah, this isn’t merely bad thinking or incompetence. This is malice.” And then several years of noticing that things that merely seemed incorrect or suboptimal are actually remarkably toxic.
The Olympics, the World Cup and the Superbowl are 100% the product of “striver culture.” Is there a single case of someone who didn’t practice for hundreds—thousands—of hours simply showing up and taking the gold, or scoring the winning goal, or getting the MVP award?
Maybe the millennials are the awful ones. Mom tries to do something nice and the daughter decides to publicly shame her. I wouldn’t want to help this ungrateful brat either.
Seeing the striver discourse, one difference with Western obsessives is that a parent notices genuine talent in the kid, and then sacrifices everything to make sure it gets developed. Mozart benefited from having a father like that - but he probably would have become a musical genius even without him. Maybe he wouldn’t have got as far.
The striver culture that rubs a lot of Americans the wrong way is forcing kids to do things like memorize words no one uses for spelling bees, or forcing them into learning violin when they have no real talent - and depriving them of a childhood. And then being told this is ‘necessary’ because it might raise your SAT score.
the frequency of people saying they don’t want anyone crying at their funeral and want them to celebrate instead is a testament to how deeply our culture fears and suppresses real grief
Watched The Lion King with the kids and was struck by how old-fashioned its moral feels now:
You can't just do what feels good
Accept responsibility
Step up and fulfill your obligations
Modern Disney reverses this:
Reject the obligations imposed on you.
Be true to yourself.
Do what makes you happy.
That's quite an shift in one generation.
From growing up to perpetual adolescence
🚨HEROIC RESCUE: Five brave college students spring into action to save a mother and her two young boys from a sinking SUV submerged in a freezing creek!
While driving through Burke County, Georgia, on their way to a weekend getaway in Savannah, five University of Georgia students witnessed a horrific crash as an SUV veered off the road and plunged into a deep creek.
The mother managed to escape the sinking vehicle, but her two young sons remained trapped inside as water rapidly filled the cabin.
Without hesitation, Molly McCollum, Jane McArdle, Eleanor Cart, Clarke Jones, and Kaitlyn Iannace pulled over, leapt down the steep embankment, and waded into the murky, frigid water.
Together, the women pulled the older boy to safety before realizing the 4-year-old was still trapped underwater, securely strapped into his submerged car seat.
Working under extreme pressure, they freed the toddler from the submerged vehicle after he had been underwater for several minutes and was no longer breathing.
Drawing on her background as a certified lifeguard, Clarke Jones immediately performed CPR on the riverbank, pumping his chest until the little boy gasped and began breathing again on his own!
First responders arrived shortly after, confirming that the quick instincts and heroic teamwork of these five young women saved the lives of an entire family!
(Not) sorry but i’m uninterested in a (colorless, muddy, gray/teal) “gothic” adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in the original setting. I love the original play’s juxtaposition of the italian renaissance’s brilliancy & beauty with its brutality & violence, Zeffirelli understood this
I have lived/studied/worked abroad numerous times. I felt grateful to have this experience, asked a lot of questions to understand the foreign place.
The defining quality of a lot of newcomers to the USA is an arrogance that seeks to impose itself on natives.
It’s just deeply ugly and rude.
