Lots of (slo-mo) activity at the orchard apiary mid-day today. Small amounts of pollen coming in and a few crash landings! 🐝

Approving banned pesticide for 4th year in a row shows that the ban is a sham👎
These toxic pollutants add to a #ChemicalCocktail that puts both wildlife & public health at risk🐝💚
Government must uphold the ban & fund nature-friendly farming practices

Yet again hunt activity trashing the #sssi . Horses and motorbikes on a footpath on protected land. If it had been mountain bikers there would be uproar. @NaturalEngland@quantockhills
@ElmTreeBees These 2 biggies mean I am just the same height as the top. They're in an orchard & flowers are over so shouldn't get any bigger (I hope!). May have to take the top 2 supers off frame by frame they're so heavy and high! Nice problem to have!
MY DAILY BEE FACTOID
•Bees fly more than once around the world to gather 1 lb of honey.
•The average life of a honey bee during the working season is about 6 weeks.
•Nectar gathered by the bee contains about 70% water. Honey is about 17% water.

#HoneyBees wax is true wax unlike paraffin, a petroleum byproduct. Beeswax is secreted from glands 2 build comb 4 brood rearing &2 store food. It is used in drugs, cosmetics, artists' materials, chocolate, furniture polish & candles.

MY DAILY BEE FACTOID:
HONEYBEES eat honey to make BEESWAX: 7 lb of honey to make 1 lb wax! Wax is secreted in flakes from 8 glands under the bee's abdomen. Then they mold the wax into the perfect honeycomb structure. Humans use it in many ways.

Interesting weather for March! Overnight snowfall.
Made sure yesterday that all my colonies had emergency fondant and were strapped tightly.
Love the silence from snowfall.
@BeekeepersHour I've been cleaning hive equipment, during the brief time in the day when it's not too freezing outside but not too warm to attract a crowd of investigators (bees of course).
It's Somerset BKA lecture day on Saturday, in person again at last. Yay, can't wait.

At Montreal COP15 we signed up to bold pesticide reductions.
We need goverment actions that follow their words.

In the central plains of Venezuela, Ligia Elena Moreno Veliz gets up at 5:30 am to meet her bees.
She likes to go when it is dark out, when the bees are less active; so she either goes first thing in the morning or in the evening after nightfall.

BREAKING: The government just approved the use of a BANNED bee-killing pesticide AGAIN!
One teaspoon of the pesticide is enough to kill 1.25 billion bees - it should be kept away from them!
Who else thinks the government should listen to the science and NOT the sugar lobby?
It’s that sad time of the year when the last few, unsold Christmas candles get melted down….. to make new, non-Christmas ones for New Year!
All that’s left to do is finish them & wrap for sale.
Then loads of prep for the new beekeeping season 2023.
#BeekeepersHour#Britishbee
Finished craft sales for Christmas, checked colonies, weighed, cleared behind mouseguards, (dead bees following the cold spell). Getting ready for Christmas visitors (human!).
Happy holidays to all your followers #BeekeepersHour 😊 see you in 2023. 👋 🐝
