EXPLAINED - THE POLO LOGO WAR IS OVER

After 48 years of courtroom battles and trademark tricks, South Africa’s home-grown Polo brand is finally being sold to Ralph Lauren.

The Competition Commission has approved the takeover by the American luxury giant, ending a bizarre saga that began when local firm LA Group registered a near-identical polo-player logo in 1976 – nine years after Ralph Lauren’s original.

For decades, some South Africans wore “Polo” thinking it was the famous US label.

A CLOSER LOOK

1/ The South African pony faces right; the Ralph Lauren pony faces left.

2/ Ralph Lauren has been blocked from selling Polo clothing in South Africa for 48 years.

3/ Ralph Lauren Corporation is valued at around $16-billion (market cap, Nov 2025).

4/ Ralph Lauren operates in more than 180 countries but until now never sold its core Polo clothing line in South Africa.

5/ The Competition Commission banned any retrenchments of Polo staff as a condition of the sale.
