I think I finally figured out why Joss’s photos of Gawin have started feeling increasingly intimate to me over the years. It’s not simply that he takes photos of him. They’ve started feeling less like “this is what Gawin looked like” and more like “this is how Gawin looked to me.”

And those are two very different kinds of photographs.

What keeps catching me about Joss’s portraits of Gawin is that so many of them are direct. Gawin is looking straight into his camera. And across the years, those portraits have started feeling increasingly intimate even though the basic composition hasn’t necessarily changed.

Because there’s something different about a direct portrait. You’re not catching someone unaware or borrowing intimacy from a candid moment. They know you’re looking at them. They’re looking back at you. And whatever ends up in that photograph was made somewhere inside that exchange.

That’s why the progression is so interesting to me. The pose didn’t need to become more intimate. The basic setup stayed the same. Gawin looking directly into Joss’s camera. But the photos started feeling more and more intimate.

And obviously I can’t tell you what Joss feels from a photograph. But maybe intimacy in a portrait isn’t always about how someone poses for you. Sometimes it’s about how comfortable they’ve become being seen by you.

Which brings me back to why these photos feel less like “look at Gawin” and more like “this is how I see Gawin.”

Sometimes the most revealing person in a photograph is the one you can’t see because he’s standing behind the camera.
