Using the immune system to target tumours has transformed cancer care, but immunotherapy does not work for everyone. Some patients do not respond, and researchers have struggled to explain why.
#QueensU researcher Sébastien Talbot has traced part of the answer to nerves inside tumours that release signals which can disrupt the body’s immune response and make treatments less effective.
His team is now studying whether blocking these signals, including with drugs already used for conditions like migraines, could help more patients benefit from immunotherapy.
