This is a really common feeling among fans, and honestly, it's easy to see why the Mangekyō Sharingan often feels stronger than the Rinnegan, even though the Rinnegan is canonically the higher-tier dōjutsu.
The Mangekyō is built around abilities that are flashy, personal, and instantly memorable. When you see them in action, they feel overwhelming.
• Amaterasu
Black flames that keep burning whatever they touch until it's completely destroyed.
• Tsukuyomi
A genjutsu so powerful that the user can control the victim's perception of time and reality within the illusion.
• Kamui
The ability to become intangible, warp objects away, and travel between dimensions. Easily one of the most broken abilities in the entire series.
• Susanoo
A gigantic armored warrior that gives the user incredible offensive and defensive power.
These techniques produced some of the most iconic moments and fights in Naruto, so it's no surprise they leave such a strong impression.
The Rinnegan works a little differently.
Instead of focusing on a few signature abilities, it's more like a complete arsenal. Its true strength comes from versatility and the sheer number of broken abilities it provides.
A fully awakened Rinnegan grants access to:
• Preta Path
The ability to absorb chakra-based attacks and even replenish your own chakra.
• Deva Path
Techniques like Shinra Tensei and Chibaku Tensei, allowing the user to repel forces or create massive gravitational constructs.
• Asura Path
Mechanical weapons, extra limbs, missiles, and body enhancements.
• Human Path
The ability to extract souls and read information directly from a person's mind.
• Naraka Path
Interrogation and restoration through the King of Hell.
• Outer Path
Control over life and death, the Gedo Statue, chakra receivers, and even resurrection.
On paper, the Rinnegan is absurdly powerful. The problem is that many of its abilities are more technical than flashy. A giant Susanoo swinging a sword or black flames engulfing a target tends to leave a bigger impression than chakra absorption or soul-related abilities.
That's why a lot of fans feel the Mangekyō is stronger.
When you look strictly at power scaling, though, a mastered Rinnegan sits above even the strongest Mangekyō and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Characters like Madara and Sasuke reached an entirely different level once the Rinnegan entered the picture.
So the perception isn't really about power.
The Mangekyō has more aura, more dramatic moments, and some of the coolest abilities in the series.
The Rinnegan is simply the more complete and powerful dōjutsu overall.
That's why the Mangekyō often feels stronger, even when the lore says otherwise.
