That is why the legislative text matters much more than the headline “100% tariff on India.”

No automatic 100% tariff yet. The crucial questions are what the House passes, what the final legislation says, whether Trump signs it, whether India qualifies under the final criteria, and whether Trump actually uses the authority.

The US House votes today on a bill that lets Trump put 100% tariffs on India.

Everyone has read that line. Almost nobody has read Section 115.

Section 113 says the President shall raise duties up to 100% on the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas. Section 115 says he can waive it whenever he decides it is in the national interest. India is not named in the law. The list comes from trade data and gets redrawn every 180 days.

So what actually changes? A threat that used to live in a Truth Social post now lives in a statute. It does not expire with a news cycle. It sits on the desk until the trade deal is signed.

Four things worth watching, none of them the headline:

Does the House pass it today, or does it slip past the Nov 9 return from recess. Does Trump sign it as is, or hold out for the Iran tariff amendment he asked for. What India's Russian crude volumes actually do from here, given July was a record 2.78 million bpd. And the BTA timeline, because that is where this weapon gets used.

Nothing to buy or sell on this. If quality exporters fall 20% on an actual imposition rather than a headline, that is a different conversation.
