Two Palestinian brothers told us they were beaten off their own land near the Elazar settlement in February and warned never to return. They stayed away, and lost the pruning season for the grapevines that feed their whole family.

Under Israel’s reading of the Ottoman Land Code, farmland left uncultivated for three years can be declared “state land” and handed to settlements (B’Tselem, Yesh Din). Staying away could cost them the land itself.

A settler installed a swing directly in front of the only bathroom a Palestinian family in Umm al-Khair has. It blocks the door. That was his intention.

Then the army declared the ground a closed military zone. The family can now be arrested for walking to their bathroom, or for moving the swing.

On July 6, a settler pogrom in Umm al-Khair left 6 Palestinians needing medical treatment. We went back.

In July 2025 Israel’s government handed dozens of ATVs to illegal West Bank outposts, funded through Smotrich’s ministry with public money, to deepen Israeli control of the land. Settlers use these same vehicles to drive Palestinian families off it.
