5. I Refused to Believe That I Was Powerless
I’m very stubborn, and in this particular circumstance, that ended up serving me well.
I was sick for 17 years. This wasn’t some new phenomenon in my life. When my doctors told me that I was going to be sick for the rest of my life, and that it would likely get significantly worse very quickly, my honest reaction was: “Fuck that. They’re wrong.”
It’s so easy to fall into a victim mentality when you’ve been sick for a long time. And I absolutely felt alone in my suffering for many, many years. But what good does it do me to believe that the rest of my life is going to be wrought with additional hardship? What good does it do me to spend my energy trying to convince other people to understand a reality they may never fully be able to understand? What good does it do me to focus all of my attention on being sick, rather than looking at the blessings I still have?
For me, my illnesses weren’t a death sentence. So, why not focus on the life that I still had left in me? I couldn’t control everything that was happening to my body. But I could control where I placed my attention, how I responded, and whether I continued to believe that my story was already written. And sometimes, refusing to believe that you are powerless is the first tiny piece of power you get back.
4. I Customized What I Did to the Exact State of My Body and Mind
For many years, I cycled through radically different levels of energy, strength, mental acuity, and overall physical functioning. There were months when I was almost catatonic. Months when I couldn’t think. Months when I couldn’t feel emotion.
I had almost perfect recall previously. I never really had to study or try very hard to learn, until illness hit me with its vengeance. I managed my way through for a while, but eventually I started experiencing massive gaps in my memory and lost the ability to learn new information.
I had previously been athletic, and at times, I was so weak that I could barely walk across the room. So whatever state I was in, I learned to focus on what I COULD actually do instead of wasting my energy mourning what I couldn’t. Can’t learn anything new? Okay. I stopped reading and started doing. Building, creating. Can’t play tennis anymore? Okay. I’ll go on nature walks or do some light stretching. Can’t get out of bed? Okay. I’ll meditate. I’ll listen to music. Can’t feel joy? Okay. I’ll sit at the beach and try to appreciate the feeling of the sun on my skin and the smell of salt in the air. I learned to always find SOMETHING, no matter how small, that could connect me back to what it felt like to be alive.
Trump’s WHO withdrawal & pause on health agency comms stirred the pot—does the system need this kind of shake-up?

How is medicine likely to change in the future?
Functional medicine is paving the way for advanced preventative care, focusing on identifying the root cause of disease rather than taking a symptom-management approach. @quantgene Webinar
