New York in the early 1900s hit you like a living machine. Steamships dumped hopeful immigrants onto Ellis Island as steel skeletons clawed the sky. Elevated trains roared overhead while horses still clattered through streets jammed with pushcarts, shouting newsboys, and a dozen languages.
Uptown mansions glittered; downtown tenements overflowed with laundry and lives. Broadway lights, coal smoke, and raw ambition collided in one unstoppable roar.
I wonder if anyone within this amazing compilation of restored pictures thought people would be looking at them over a century later.
