I work with children. I coach gymnastics and cheerleading as it says in my bio. I’ve been involved in athletics since I can remember. But what I’ve noticed over the past decade especially the last 5 years or so something has seriously gone wrong with our children. Put aside the gymnastic angle and let me explain why I am so worried. The kids today (NOT ALL, but a huge portion) don’t know how to jump rope, they can’t run properly. They can barely do jumping jacks. These are basic motor skills, coordination skills that are kids are simply not able to do. And before anyone is snarky and blame me and say it’s my coaching I am telling you it’s not that. Children are not playing outside the way they need to. There attention span is much shorter. Letting your kids play on tablets/iPads have access to smart phones is NOT parenting and it’s not helping your child. It is hindering them. I am not the only one noticing. They expect instant gratification instead of working hard to achieve a skill because they’re used to by a touch of a button getting exactly what they want in a moments notice. We need to do better. Somethings in life take hard work and dedication and helps build self esteem. We need strong children so when they grow up one day they can believe in themselves and that hard work pays off. I am not trying to lecture anyone but I am looking long term for our country and it is beginning to scare me. I am not saying abuse or mistreat your kids but if things don’t change we are setting them up for failure and one day they will be in charge in many different industries. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?? Stop giving trophies just because your child showed up. Once again this is NOT doing any of the kids any favors. I’d appreciate any feedback and let me know if anyone else has noticed or seen what I am witnessing??
