Here in Las Vegas we tried other options and now we are trying car destruction. We aren’t going to let these folks ruin the quality of our lives while risking our safety.

THINGS WE TRIED FIRST:

Before progressing to the permanent demolition and shredding of vehicles, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (LVMPD) and Clark County officials attempted a variety of alternative crackdowns:

Task Force crackdowns: Specialized police units (such as LVMPD's RAID and VIPER squads) have aggressively targeted repeat offenders, making dozens of arrests for felony evading and reckless driving. Many of these suspects have been booked into county jail pending bail or trial.

Zero-Tolerance Operations: Coordinated multi-agency operations have led to the arrests of dozens of individuals at a time. For example, a single three-day enforcement operation resulted in 77 arrests and the impoundment of nearly 60 vehicles.

Severe Criminal Charges: Participants have faced charges ranging from gross misdemeanors to felonies. In cases involving violence, suspects have been arrested and held on attempted murder charges.

Vehicle Destruction: In a stark warning to participants, police have moved to crush and destroy vehicles seized from individuals involved in dangerous stunt driving and fleeing law enforcement.

Task Force Operations: Created the R.A.I.D (Racing Apprehension and Intervention Detail) to focus specifically on investigating reckless driving, trick-driving stunts, and identifying repeat offenders.

Felony Evasion Stings: Deployed [V.I.P.E.R.] units to investigate suspects who fled from patrol officers, leading to felony charges, vehicle impoundments, and driver's license suspensions.

Intersection Modifications: Cut physical "rumble strips" into the pavement at popular takeover intersections. These are safe for standard traffic but disrupt the traction needed to drift or perform doughnuts.

Speed Cushions & Acoustic Deterrents: Added physical speed cushions and installed ShotSpotter technology in problem areas to immediately alert police to disturbances and slow down reckless drivers.

Public Evidence Campaigns: Allowed residents to upload video evidence of events to the specialized LVMPD RAID Unit Email to help identify and locate participants after the fact.
