Canada will match the new U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar.
In addition, we are introducing $7.5 billion in new and enhanced measures to support Canadian workers and businesses. That builds on the nearly $25 billion in supports introduced since the implementation of the U.S. unjustified tariffs.

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame.
Late last evening I instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what the U.S. has offered, and we will not give what they have asked.
Canada will match the U.S.’ new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses. We take this step confident that it is in the best interests of Canada.
In the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labour Day.
Team Canada needs to stand together more united than ever before.
The prime minister has my full support for a strong response—tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar. As we fight to protect Canadian sovereignty and economic security, everything needs to be on the table. Ontario is ready to do its part.
Thunderhead stands as a tribute to the lives, stories, and contributions of 2SLGBTQI+ people across Canada.
It’s reminder of the discrimination too many endured — and honours those who fought to build a country where everyone can live freely, safely, and with dignity.
When our aluminum industry was hit by tariffs, we acted decisively to protect Canadian businesses and workers.
Yesterday, I stopped by Rio Tinto in Saguenay. We’re backing them with a major investment that will protect 5,000 jobs, expand production of clean aluminum, and strengthen Canada’s competitive edge in global markets.
We’re beyond grateful to our friends and partners in Mexico for sending hundreds of firefighters to B.C.
They’re joining a team of roughly 2,000 wildfire service personnel who are working tirelessly to get these fires under control.
Today, many were shocked by yet another video of the drone “safari” Russians are carrying out against civilians in Kherson. A Russian drone deliberately hunted down a man selling vegetables and detonated right next to him. The Russians even admitted to the crime, showing zero regret and openly boasting about tormenting people. The man was wounded in the blast. Every single day, ordinary people in Kherson face these Russian "safaris."
The world must see this. It must see every piece of evidence that Russia has gone mad and that its soldiers take pleasure in killing and abusing civilians. Without pressure on Russia, the dismantling of its capacity for aggression, and real security guarantees, it is simply impossible to imagine the world being able to coexist with this evil. We must remain resolute in defending life. We must act and support life in ways that force Russia to seriously think about peace rather than expanding the range of its drones.
This is not just about Ukraine. Russia’s campaign against human life must be stopped here in Ukraine before it spreads further. Finland and Kazakhstan, the Baltic states and Poland, the countries of the South Caucasus, Romania, and Moldova—all should work together to ensure real security guarantees and bring Russia’s war to an end. Peace is needed, which requires cooperation among everyone in the world who truly values peace. Thank you to everyone standing with Ukraine!
Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney has gotten a vote of confidence from the international investment community for his response to US trade hostilities, says @Matthew_Winkler (via @opinion) https://t.co/elKMARC5jk
In 1964, Anthony Hopkins composed a beautiful waltz called And the Waltz Goes On. It was never performed, and over time the sheet music was forgotten.
Nearly 50 years later, his wife found the music and sent it to conductor André Rieu, who arranged for it to be performed in Vienna in 2011.
Imagine spending decades believing something you created would never be heard... then sitting in the audience as it comes to life for the very first time.
It's a reminder that not every dream happens when we want it to. Sometimes life has its own timing.
What's a dream you've held onto, no matter how long it's taken?
Carney: "I'm going to take this opportunity to thank President Scheinbaum and the Mexican people for sending 200 firefighters to help us with our fires here. That's what friends do when you have crisis and fires."
