In my humble opinion, with the black hair, I think you’ve made Mai look more like Momiji from the Dead or Alive franchise from Koei Tecmo cosplaying as Mai than Mai herself. Maybe that mysterious artist known as KN drew that armored character based off one of Ohata-san's production designs that were never seen by the general Japanese public. There's also the possibility that "KN" could be an abbreviation for a nickname or psuedonym that Ohata-san might have used at the time.

Although I dislike the violence that happened to her in this picture, I still think it looks great as a whole. The video-game player in me can’t help but to think that this particular picture was inspired from the stage of Colossus from the 1994 Capcom fighting game using the X-Men license entitled X-Men: Children of the Atom in which two opponents fight atop a collapsing Los Angeles freeway in which the asphalt can be destroyed to have both opponents land on a boat circling a canal in L.A. while an army of Sentinels and LAPD move around in the background (A possible reference to the real-life L.A. I only know of Judy Landers because of the 1986 comedy movie Stewardess School showing on Comedy Central throughout the mid-to-late-1990s, but I definitely loved her scene with making the dean hard during the orientation scene from that movie, LOL. I was pissed to find out that that was a body double later on, though.
