For many of us in #chennai, it's goodnight time...For the #IndianArmy troops, it's night duty time in flooded Thoraipakkam, OMR...they're wading through waist-deep waters to provide food & water to the areas that are cut off..

Chennai Rains: We need 1 more city for the Future.
With a population exceeding 1 crore people, outstripping even New York and London, it's high time we expand our urban framework to other parts of TN!
A whole state should not be reliant on 1 Major City for big MNCs!

Water above knee level and no power since Sunday evening. Without power & network, unable to contact anyone. Kindly help with draining water and restore power. @TANGEDCO_Offcl
Cooum river- the heart of Chennai is in her glory. Though these Chennai floods test city inhabitant resolve, they also revive the beautiful river ecosystem of Chennai. Still, there is a scope to acquire more land to expand their width with river shore park
I said this 100+ times, lakes are for storing water, improve ground water, control temperature..etc they do not prevent flood. Urban areas like Chennai need larger storm water drain. Unless we create new drains (require relocating people), Chennai will keep flooding.
One of the major reasons for massive stagnation and flooding is the anchoring of the system very close to #Chennai ! Freakin thing moved at snails pace and pushed back drainage of the major rivers carrying flood waters from Chennai 🤦🏽Nature just went wacko 🤦🏽

Short thread:
#Chennai, lakes, and floods
I have written some threads about the flooding in Chennai, this one would focus specifically on the lake aspect.
#Map below shows the flood forecasted areas in Chennai for an extreme amount of rainfall. If we carefully look into this forecast map, we can see that apart from the major rivers, there are many other paths for the water to run which appear like a tree branching out.
This forecast based on coarser DEM with extreme rainfall & was prepared by my team mates @smkirthiga & pavithra
Pardon the visual quality of maps since I dont have much time to prepare this
It will be one week (in Tamil channels) and two days (in National channels) of debates about encroaching upon on lakes, unsustainable development, incident preparedness and then regular programming until the next Chennai floods.
