What makes the #tropical#rainforest so important for life on Earth? How much rainforest is left today and in what state is it now?

Nice piece by @xiaoying_you at @DialogueEarth_ , discussing different #EV battery technologies and our recent report at @RainforestNORW that looks into the biodiversity and #deforestation due diligence of automakers.
We can cut the demand for high deforestation risk minerals!
Emerging battery technologies offer the opportunity to minimize mining impacts like deforestation by reducing the need for rare minerals.
But as @julianasah of @RainforestNORW told @xiaoying_you of @DialogueEarth_, caution is needed.
"Cutting the demand for some “high risk” minerals and battery chemistries will allow the industry to reduce its negative impacts on biodiversity and forests, said Julia Naime.
"But she also warns that 'caution is needed so that alternative battery chemistries do not create other adverse impacts on nature or people.'”

@toerrisjaeger , Director of Rainforest Foundation Norway, commends the decision, stating:
"This highlights a strong commitment to protecting the remaining Indonesian rainforests and is a recognition of the crucial work carried out by Indigenous communities.
Great news for #Indonesia’s rainforest! Minister of Environment and Forestry, Dr Siti Nurbaya Bakar, unveiled Tuesday at #OTFF plans to safeguard 15 million hectares of rainforest in a collaboration agreement with @BezosEarthFund , 23% dedicated to #Indigenous forest protection.
"The Indigenous peoples are fundamental in protecting rainforests and their valuable biodiversity. With their full participation, and by recognizing their rights, Indonesia can succeed in protecting and restoring its immensely biodiverse and valuable forests from destruction."

More than 8000 Indigenous people gathered in Brazilia this week for the 20th year in a row. They delivered 25 demands to the government, congress and court, demanding recognition and demarcation of their lands and respect and protection of Indigenous rights.
Great event with partners at #UNPFII on how #IndigenousPeoples' self-governance in the Amazon and the protection of peoples in voluntary isolation is key to halt #biodiversity loss. This needs to be reflected in governments' strategies to implement #GBF and achieve #30by30
20 years ago we supported setting up Peru’s first control post Monte Salvado to protect indigenous people in isolation. Now this is becoming a cross border initiative involving communities in both Peru and Brazil. Great interview with our partner @OrpioA.

@ClimateHome The story cites our new Path to Scale dashboard and funding brief, which shows that while funding for Indigenous and local communities rose with 36% since 2020, there is no evidence of a systematic shift towards direct funding. Check it out: https://t.co/YHgULJXLSe
