If you started following Desi Hip-Hop recently, you probably don't know why thousands of fans, creators, and artists were talking about boycotting Hustle.
Here's a recap of one of the biggest controversies in recent DHH history.
1/ MTV Hustle launched in 2019 with the goal of bringing Indian hip-hop into the mainstream. For many underground artists, it became the biggest stage in the country.
2/ At the same time, Rohan Cariappa had become one of the most respected voices in DHH. Through years of track breakdowns, reviews, and educational content, he helped countless listeners discover and understand the culture.
5/ Soon after, a dispute broke out between Rohan and MTV Hustle over his review content and its use of the show's material. The issue quickly became one of the biggest talking points in the DHH community.
MTV Hustle started taking down his videos by issuing copyright strikes.
6/ What followed was something rarely seen in Indian hip-hop.
Fans, creators, artists, and pages across the scene publicly supported Rohan. Calls to boycott Hustle spread rapidly, and "Boycott Hustle" became one of the biggest conversations in DHH.
7/ The discussion was no longer just about one YouTube video.
People were debating creator rights, fair use, criticism, and whether independent voices should be allowed to review and comment on a mainstream show without facing takedowns or restrictions.
9/ Fast forward to today.
A new season is here.
Creators are reacting to it.
Fans are watching it.
Artists are promoting it.
The boycott that once united the community is barely mentioned anymore.
11/ This thread isn't about telling you whether you should support Hustle.
It's about remembering what happened.
If we ask for accountability as a community, we should also remember why we asked for it in the first place.
12/ Whether you think Hustle deserved a second chance or believe people simply moved on that's your call.
But history shouldn't disappear just because it's inconvenient.
