Canara & Kānarese were distinct. Europeans used "Canara" & "Canarim" for Konkan & Konkani. Initially, they called the coast "Tulinat" during Vijayanagara era, then "Canara" post 16th C.CE. Later, some Mysori Distorians mixed up #Canara(Konkan) with #Kānarese (Kannada) in 20th C.
