@Lamarcuss0@alphyy43 The important thing is that Cote never actually promised that licensed chapters couldn't leave again. In September 2021, he said his determination to make Stranger Things the last departure, but that was an ambition, not a contractual guarantee.
@Eskers1@GBPolitcs@FT The ~£9.5bn manifesto figure covered specific new pledges, not the whole future spending envelope. Labour chose to spend far more in the Budget, and that’s fair to criticise, but the OBR also found £9.5bn of undisclosed inherited spending pressures. Both things can be true.
@Eskers1@GBPolitcs@FT “Take responsibility” cuts both ways. Labour should own the consequences of its own decisions, but pretending Brexit, Trump-era trade shocks, weak inherited finances and global events suddenly stopped mattering in July 2024 isn’t serious economics either.
@OneCrispyGraham@BBCNews That’s the whole point of an investigation to determine if they have or have not done anything illegal... my god... some people really aren't very clever nowadays
@TiceRichard JLR’s problems apparently have nothing to do with falling sales, US tariffs, Chinese competition or a cyberattack that hammered production, it’s all just “net zero and Reeves”. That’s not analysis, it’s just fitting every bad headline into Reform’s favourite talking points.
@irishkazza@Fletcher_2215@tonypatt2000 I’m not denying the NIC rise has hurt businesses. But an informal poll at a networking event isn’t the national economy, and it still avoids my question. Reverse the NIC rise: what replaces the revenue? Your 1p tax rise, spending cuts or borrowing?
@DarrenSelkus The State Pension is itself part of the welfare bill. And “benefits aren’t taxed” isn’t even universally true, some benefits are taxable and some aren’t. Pensioners only pay income tax when their total taxable income exceeds the personal allowance, just like everyone else.
@irishkazza@Fletcher_2215@tonypatt2000 I’m not disputing your business was hit hard by the NIC changes, that’s a fair criticism. But one business doesn’t prove Labour has wrecked the economy. If you reverse the NIC rise, what replaces the revenue: spending cuts, another tax, or more borrowing?
@GarethDavies_MP Interesting from a Tory MP. In 2019 your party promised no rises in Income Tax, NI or VAT. By 2021, the Tory government delivered the biggest tax-raising Budget since 1993, then added a £14bn NI rise. Suddenly Gareth Davies is very concerned about tax rises.
@irishkazza@Fletcher_2215@tonypatt2000 Businesses failing “every day” isn’t evidence that Labour has made things worse, businesses fail under every government. The latest official figures actually show insolvencies lower than a year ago. What specific policy are you blaming, and what would you replace it with?
@Fletcher_2215@tonypatt2000 I’d like to see anyone undo 14 years of Tory damage in two years while dealing with wars, global instability and other pressures outside the government’s control. Pretending Labour should have fixed everything already is hardly realistic, and proves you're stupid.
@KEdge23 For a “political enthusiast”, there’s remarkably little policy here. What’s your alternative? Lower taxes means spending cuts, more borrowing, or finding revenue elsewhere. Which is it?
@RobertJenrick JLR’s problems apparently have nothing to do with falling sales, US tariffs, Chinese competition or a cyberattack that hammered production, it’s all just “net zero and Reeves”. That’s not analysis, it’s just fitting every bad headline into Reform’s favourite talking points.
@Jenny_1884 “Urged to” is doing a lot of work here. It’s a BCC proposal, not a government decision, and Labour is still committed to the triple lock this Parliament. Ukraine, France and asylum are also nowhere near “the majority” of UK spending. Criticise the sums, but use real numbers.
@TheRealJamieKay People are so convinced Britain is broken that they’ll believe politicians who reinforce that view. Polling shows huge pessimism, and the parties selling the bleakest picture benefit from it. When they behave like the establishment they condemn, it becomes “yeah, but…"
@potter_nei37306@MikeHolden42@Northernlady678 Rotherham was investigated in 2014, Casey reported in 2015 and governments had years to act. Several people now in Reform were Tory MPs or ministers at the time. So where was this urgency when they actually had the power to do something? Apparently it wasn’t such a priority then.
@petetho05730914@BotFinderUK Impressive. Net zero, foreigners, Brussels and pensions all managed to cause my gas bill at once. Now can you explain the actual mechanism?
@benonwine He has no idea how foreign aids works for major developed economies. If you used Google like he said, it'd show that it's entire UK bilateral aid budget for Pakistan in 2024/25 was only just over £100m across health, education, climate, human rights and economic growth
@biggle1908@Barbi_bb Virtually every major developed economy has a foreign aid budget. Posting a list of countries without saying what the money actually funded doesn’t demonstrate waste or a “ripoff”. Which specific programme are you saying should have been cut, and why?
