England has a network of public footpaths, bridleways, and byways denser than any country in the world. These pass through fields, farms, and villages. They are legally protected so landowners must keep them open.

Public rights of way and the right to roam means the entire countryside is walkable, not just through 'wilderness' but through working land. I've spent countless days walking through the English countryside, along the coast...I can't tell you how marvelous it is.

I don't think it's possible to be truly English without a love of the country walk.
