@smerconish Involuntary hospitalization may help a few, harm others, but won’t do much to end the crisis without funding the supportive programs that actually help
@smerconish I have been a mental health advocate for many years and founded a nonprofit @YMHProject in an effort educate, empower, an support communities so we don’t keep losing our children to this mental health crisis. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in youth ages 10-29.
@smerconish I have a young adult son who lives with bipolar disorder and was diagnosed as a child. The lack of available services on all levels is shameful! We need to invest in early intervention but are stuck in crisis management with severely underfunded psychiatric facilities & services
@smerconish More money needs to be spend on the devices that will actually help people recover or become stable. Great article in NYTimes https://t.co/ks7Orj6lA5
@smerconish@smerconish while I applaud the mayor’s efforts, they are fraught with serious problems. Police decide who gets taken to hospitals, where there are not enough beds, and then people are released with little to no follow up care such as supportive community housing.
