Raghunath Das, Diwan of the Nizam, became embroiled in a feud with Raja Ramachandra Jadhavrao, the grandson of the famed Maratha commander Dhanasimha Shambhusimha Jadhavrao. After Das ordered the confiscation of Jadhavrao’s estate at Bhalki, a series of letters passed between the two. When the Afghan soldiers began clamouring for their overdue pay, Jadhavrao sent them a message offering them the opportunity to kill Raghunath Das and join his army. On 30 April 1752, the Afghans attacked and killed Raghunath Das and his nephew, Rai Rayan, at Bhalki.
