@bennyjohnson The 1920s and early 1930s were the era of Prohibition, meaning the manufacture and sale of alcohol were illegal. Despite this, underground drinking networks ("speakeasies") thrived, and alcohol remained a common coping mechanism or escape from poverty
@bennyjohnson The year 1929 marked the start of the Great Depression following the Wall Street stock market crash. This economic disaster caused massive job losses, evictions, and poverty, leading to a rapid rise in homelessness and shifting the nation's social landscape
@bennyjohnson NYC the economy is booming - thank you for the policies by Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor Guillani. Yes, Trump economy - record wealth and new infrastructure. Yes, Mayor Mandani - we will see In next several years his policies impact.
@bennyjohnson 9 The Great Depression was a severe global economic downturn lasting from 1929 to 1939. Triggered by the Wall Street crash of 1929 in October, it led to mass unemployment, widespread bank failures, steep drops in industrial output, and deep poverty worldwide.
@UnslovedAgain Work hard and save - buy a house/condo and make sure their kids attend a college with a major that leads to financially rewarding careers. American Dream. Buffola, NYS - lot of Bangladeshi.
@FoxNews Then the Epstein list - people raped kids and sex trafficked kids ? I know they are powerful and rich but how come they are above the law ? A teacher molests a kid - go to jail. So we have a class system or caste system or some people above the law ? This is NOT American values
Today, I was back in Floral Park for the Queens India Day Parade — this time as the first Indian American mayor of New York City. It was an experience I will never forget.
Mayor David Dinkins once described our city as a gorgeous mosaic. Today, I saw that mosaic in the Hindus and Christians, Muslims and Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs across the Indian diaspora who have helped make our city what it is. To all of them, I say: it is an honor to do that work alongside you.
Happy Indian Independence Day!
I’m proud to be on the ground with the Indian-American community across New York State—elevating our voices and helping shape the future of New York.
My parents came to America from India with $300 and one suitcase. Their daughter would go on to make history as the first Indian-American woman elected to New York State office—and pass historic legislation making Diwali a New York City public school holiday, setting a national trend.
Their journey, and the community I have been privileged to represent, remind me that in the greatest country on Earth, anything is possible.
I’ve always believed that leadership means showing up, wherever our community is building the American Dream.
Happy Indian Independence Day! 🇺🇸🇮🇳
I’m sure you will watch it repeatedly. 🫡😀
Bharat’s Amanpreet Singh
Vs
US’s Jake Hager
Amanpreet down on first slap that lead to laughs to his third slap that knocked out Jake, shocked the entire stadium.
Watch till the end. Shocker 😊
My greatest accomplishments are my kids. We homeschooled our kids. This is Sabrina at 6 and at 15. If you have 2 minutes - I’m Proud of the results
My job is to get them ready for life, and I thought the best way to do that was take responsibility for the early years rather than turning them over to teachers & schools that are overwhelmed.
