Illicit items, including weapons, were seized in only 1 per cent of Victoria Police searches without a warrant or reasonable suspicion in “designated areas” over a two-year period.

Applications for the Rights Advocacy Project 2025 program are now open.
Lawyers and advocates are needed now more than ever to support social and systemic change. RAP is a program that explores how the law can be used as a tool for change.
Are you ready to reimagine our legal system? Are you ready to learn how to use the law to build a more just and equitable world?
Then, the RAP Program is for you!
We are running three exciting projects this year, and we encourage you to apply.
The report addresses the Victorian Government's recent proposal to expand police stop and search powers. As this report shows, this is an unnecessary invasion of our human rights.
Despite very little evidence of their efficacy, these search powers continue to be expanded at the cost of Victorian's human rights and civil liberties.
Our report is the culmination of consultations across the legal sector, research, and FOI data from Victoria Police. This FOI data is key. It shows that police searches in designated areas yielded unlawful items less than 1% of the time. This is a startlingly low hit rate.
The report calls for major reforms of these powers to better protect the human rights of Victorians, and urges the Victorian Parliament to reject the current proposal to expand these abilities.
This report examines instances of "no reason" searches by Victoria Police - including designated area searches, consent searches, and searches associated with Firearm Prohibition Orders.
You can send topics to us via this link: https://t.co/03ipr6Mdwb
You can decide whether you like to be involved in supervising your suggested topic or whether you would like RAP to proceed with the project under someone else's supervision. Just let us know!
Do you have a systemic law reform project idea? The Rights Advocacy Project would love to hear from you!
We are preparing for our next project cycle in 2025 and we are calling for law reform project topics.
