This is Shaun McKenna. In 2020, he violently raped a 13 year old girl, and two other women have also reported that he assaulted them when they were teenagers. McKenna, who was diagnosed with Huntington’s in 2022, has avoided prison because of his condition — even though he was healthy enough to send obscene images of himself to one of his victims in April of 2023.

McKenna, having pled guilty to four separate charges, will instead be confined to his nursing home for three years and only allowed out with supervision — which isn’t actually a punishment at all. Judge Lord Arthurson acknowledged that each of McKenna’s offenses merited a custodial sentence on its own, but declined to incarcerate him for any of them because prison “wouldn’t meet [McKenna’s] specialized needs.”

In my opinion, the victims’ need for justice should come before any needs of Mr. McKenna’s in Judge Lord Arthurson’s eyes, but as this was a rape trial, I suppose we should count ourselves lucky that the man was even convicted.
