Freshwater Pearl Mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) covered with silt and algae in the River Owenriff, Co. Galway, last week.

These are old mussels that have not reproduced successfully for decades due to unsatisfactory water quality. They can live for over a century, so they may still be abundant in a river like the Owenriff but are considered functionally extinct because they are no longer reproducing.

Freshwater Pearl Mussels are the "canary in the coal mine" of freshwater ecosystems. However, this sentinel species of aquatic ecosystem health is critically endangered in Ireland.

It is not the OTB I first tabled in 2018, and by exempting services from the Bill we have failed to show the ambition required. But this is not the end. I used my speech last week to set the record straight on services, and make clear that we will keep going.

If we are not successful today, I will be back in this House in September to move legislation to extend the ban to include services. The #Argentine football team has out-fought & out-played every team they've beaten on the road to the World Cup Final & last night, the #England team just could not stop them. From the time England went ahead, #Argentina attacked, and attacked & England's players eventually cracked & buckled under the pressure. While the final score was 2 - 1, that score could just as easily have been 5 - 1 in favour of Argentina, they having struck the post twice & blown 2 - 3 other chances. For the 46 minutes after England took the lead, England simply could not penetrate the Argentine mid-field and back-four and were driven back into defending their own Penalty-area.
For all that I admire what #Argentina has achieved in this #WorldCup2026 I believe #Spain will be crowned as Champions this coming Sunday night.
