Last month @atomicalsxyz published the Atomicals Virtual Machine (AVM) whitepaper- focusing on bringing programmability and smart contracts onto BTC Layer 1

Main issue:
UTXO model is constrained, leaving builders with non-customizable behavior of assets as the rules of the state machines are immutable - requiring a more complex dynamic "state machine" model to record asset state changes.
​
2 potential solutions being discussed:
1. Build external protocols; bringing state machines off chain- in form of layer 2 solutions. E.g RGB , Lightning Network, CKB
2. Implementing new OP_CODES, e.g OP_CAT or add Covenants

AVM proposes a hybrid solution
An Overlay Protocol Indexer is introduced: simulating Bitcoin Script and introducing custom opcodes adding variability. This would allow creation and execution of smart contracts.
​
The simulation will run in a sandbox environment to ensure that nothing interferes with the BTC network. This environment makes up the state change including validation before posting it onto the BTC blockchain for execution.
​
The introduction of AVM - using overlay digital asset indexers to execute smart contracts on Bitcoin is a great insight into the theory which if brought to practice could add the missing piece in the lack of programmability and smart contract integration on BTC.
​
With practical examples to the introduced concept AVM could become a solid solution, enhancing Bitcoin's functionality and scalability.
