One of my favorite Dolly stories is one Julia Roberts told about being on the set of Steel Magnolias. It was, naturally, very hot and humid, and Julia turned to Dolly and said, "Aren't you hot? With the wig and everything? Just, you know, just say it's hot!"

And Dolly looked at her and said, "When I was a little girl, I used to dream about being famous and rich, and now I'm both of those things. So I'm not going to complain."

I’ve noticed, particularly in the clips from her variety show in the 70s, that Dolly would often say something like “let’s do it one more time” to indicate a final repeat of the chorus. That feels like a reflection, made pretty obvious in this clip, of how she grew up singing those Appalachian folk tunes around the house. Everyone singing and talking together, in conversation with one another. I think it’s part of what made her so alluring as a performer. She brought audiences live and on TV into that comforting circle of music and storytelling.
