@Jacob_Rees_Mogg wants Britons to do their duty and show a stiff upper lip.

He has never served his country. I have and he wants to have me arrested.

On 21 September, a panellist on his GB News show, when discussing whether British people would be prepared to fight against Russia, said:

“We’d have to lock a few people up by the way. Some of the pro-Russian voices. People who are saying there isn’t a threat, don’t fight for your country, don’t go to war for Burnham. We’d have to lock ’em up.”

In this video monologue, Rees-Mogg speaks of the need for people to fight and if necessary die for their country because, “if people are not willing to do their duty, then the country will be taken over by another country, ultimately, one way or another. This is part of the reason ancient Rome fell.”

But here’s the thing. I would do my duty to fight and be prepared to die for my country if Russia invaded Britain.

I wouldn’t be afraid to kill an invading enemy soldier.

To protect my children, my wife, my neighbours and those who fought with me.

Would Jacob Rees-Mogg fight by my side? Judge for yourself.

I have served my country. In Helmand Province, when the British Army was suffering its highest casualty rate throughout the war in Afghanistan.

In Moscow at the time of the Salisbury nerve agent incident, when I was subject to wall to wall hostile surveillance by the FSB.

Where was Jacob Rees-Mogg? I’ll tell you, earning millions trading in emerging market shares.

So you’ll forgive me if I won’t take a lecture from him on public service and 'duty'.

For I would do everything in my power to protect Great Britain from invasion even at the risk that I be killed.

But we aren’t going to be invaded.

All the warmongers like Rees-Mogg keep telling us Russia is losing.

“Russia hasn’t achieved any of its objectives,” they crow. “It controls less Ukrainian land than in 2022,” they scoff. “Ukraine is winning,” they cry.

And yet in the next breath they tell us that Russia might invade Britain, and that people like me should be locked up because we deny the obvious truth that this will happen and might happen very soon.

I’m sure right now that many people in Moscow utterly despise the people who run our country. There are many war hawks in Moscow who would like little more than destroying Britain, much as Rees-Mogg appears to like little more than the idea of destroying Russia.

But Russia isn’t going to invade.

If you don’t believe how fantastical an idea this is,just look on the map.

Progress on the battlefield in Donetsk can be measured in tens of metres on a daily basis.

It’s three thousand kilometres from Kramatorsk to Calais.

That’s right. Three thousand kilometres.

I’ve driven from the east of Ukraine to Calais and it’s a very long way.

Well then, just for argument’s sake, maybe #Russia could make life easier by avoiding #Ukraine and invading via #Lithuania as they would have a free road through Belarus and could dominate that country in a matter of hours.

Minsk, after all, was designed with wide boulevards through its centre to allow Soviet tanks to drive up to the borders with Europe, with ease.

There’s no evidence that Russia wants to fight NATO in a war through the simple expedient of invading a NATO country, even if it’s small and weak. But let’s set aside all strategy, reason and evidence and say that it does invade Lithuania.

Russia’s army still has to march two thousand kilometres to Calais.

Through Poland with its large well equipped army.

Through Germany.

Through the Netherlands.

Through Belgium.

Through France.

Further than Nazi Germany’s advance into the Soviet Union during World War II.

Then after that unbelievable feat of military endeavour, jump on boats and/or storm the Channel Tunnel to make the 21 mile crossing to reach our British shores.

Take a moment to think about that.

If World War Three does break out and in the fantastically unbelievable scenario that Russia is romping its way all across Europe in a manner that has not been possible in Ukraine, then we will all have faced a nuclear war before the Russians reach us.

But, you see, Rees-Mogg might continue, “The economy is in an awful pickle right now, and these working class fellows aren’t doing their bit and spend too much time complaining about the need for hospitals, and schools. Berty, who I like to enjoy a sherry with in Pratt’s, says it just won’t do.”

The upper class hates the idea that working class people are sitting around trying to make the best of their lives while there are battles to be fought in far off lands.

You see I am a working class person. I might not look like it. I might not sound like it. But my dad grew up in a colliery village and started work aged fifteen on steam trains before joining the army. My mum’s dad was a humble carpenter and after he passed away at a young age, her step-dad was a day-working stevedore at Southampton docks.

I just worked bloody hard because I knew not to expect any favours from the state.

If working class people start listening to me, they might start to ask why the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg have been uttering all manner of eyewash and flapdoodle about the need to forego the basic comforts of life in order to fight the Russkies.

They might ask, heaven forfend, “why can’t we just live in peace?”

And, maybe also, “can’t we get a government that puts our needs first?”

Peace? Peace means you like Putin! Peace means you are pro-Russian.

In fact, I’m pro-British.

I’ll stick two fingers up to any man who tries to attack my home.

But Russia isn’t attacking my home.

Russia wouldn’t have attacked Ukraine had the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg not kept on inviting them to fight a much bigger neighbour in the sure knowledge that we would not fight by their side.

Why Russia attacked and who was at fault is a whole separate debate, although you know my views.

But having got Ukraine into this mess, western powers have consistently faced two choices and ducked them both: either choose war and join the fight, despite the obvious risk of nuclear annihilation, or recognise that the only way to end this is through dialogue which leads to peace.

As I have said so many times, western policy has remained stuck between neither wanting war nor wanting peace, with Ukraine and Russia paying the price in blood and treasure.

Western leaders do not want war because they are cowards.

Western leaders do not want peace because they are cowards.

I consider Jacob Rees-Mogg to be a coward.

If he and his brainless panellist want to send the police to slap the cuffs on and silence my voice then so be it.

But just remember that if I’m in gaol then they might have to fight in my stead.
