🇺🇸 Most Badass Football Players: Combat Veterans Edition #5 Pat Tillman

Pat Tillman, U.S. Army Ranger and hard hitting safety for the Arizona Cardinals, was one badass football player.

Born in 1976 in California, Tillman played college football at Arizona State.

He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the seventh round of the 1998 NFL Draft.

Over four seasons, he started 39 games and developed a reputation as one of the most physical and relentless safeties in the league.

Tillman made a decision that stunned the football world after the 9/11 attacks.

He walked away from a 3 year, $3.6M contract extension with the Cardinals and enlisted in the Army along with his younger brother, Kevin.

The brothers completed the Ranger Indoctrination Program and were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

Tillman deployed to Iraq in 2003 during the initial invasion.

When he returned from Iraq, he graduated from the elite U.S. Army Ranger School on November 28, 2003.

He was then sent to Afghanistan.

On April 22, 2004, Tillman was in the rugged mountains in the eastern part of the country.

His platoon had split into two sections when the trailing group was ambushed in a canyon. Hearing the gunfire, Tillman’s forward group dismounted to provide cover.

As Tillman, a young soldier, and an allied Afghan militia fighter took a position on a ridgeline, severe miscommunication caused the trailing group of Rangers to mistake them for the enemy.

They opened heavy machine gun fire directly onto Tillman's position.

He focused on saving the young Ranger beside him.

He desperately shouted, waved his arms, and threw a visual smoke grenade to signal his platoon to cease firing.

Despite these efforts, Tillman was struck and mortally wounded by friendly fire.

He was 27 years old.

The military initially covered up the circumstances of his death, fabricating a narrative of enemy combat for his posthumous Silver Star citation.

The truth was hidden from his family for weeks.

They even allowed his brother Kevin, who was in the trailing convoy, to go home under the assumption Pat died via enemy fire.

Pat Tillman walked away from millions to serve his country. He paid the ultimate price.

He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and promoted to Corporal.

The Arizona Cardinals retired his number 40, and Arizona State retired his number 42.

Pat Tillman is an American Badass.
