@HBNadolny@JohnMoloney22@RalphyHeraldSun Except no team is paying him $4m for Butters to then leave at the end of 1 year. If Port offered him $4m per year he would likely stay as he loves the club.
@HBNadolny@JohnMoloney22@RalphyHeraldSun A deal gets done, but if it doesn’t, Butters gets to club of choice. Puts crazy money on head for 1 year contract. Say $4m, when he gets to the club he wants to go he extends another 9 years for $11m evening it to $15m over 10. No club without that arrangement drafts him @$4m
@squeakee21@AaronLabahn@CalTwomey And I’m just pointing out if he picks Geelong that would be a mistake. Pick 4 (which it would be right now) is worth way more than the 3 1st cats could offer 15, 25 and 25. Maybe they throw in a fringe player as well. Pick 4 is still better
@squeakee21@AaronLabahn@CalTwomey Butters still leaves just via trade rather than free agency. Again, a compo pick 5 or under is better than anything port can get out of the cats and may be even the dogs. 2027 and 2028 1st rounders likely to be mid 20’s for those teams with Tasmania getting most of them
@squeakee21@AaronLabahn@CalTwomey If Port finish bottom 4 and Butters pick the Cats, port would be silly to match. Compo pick under 5 would be a lot better than anything cats can offer. Especially with Tassie compensation destroying first round of 27 and 28 drafts
@Bigdog2477@TheWorm_90 Players have to want to go. That was the issue with Hawks and Essendon last year. Do either the cats or dogs have SA players likely wanting to go home? And again the 3 firsts will all be bad. Maybe 10 from the dogs this year & low 20’s (with Tassie) in 27 & 28. Pick 4 worth more?
@Bigdog2477@TheWorm_90 Surely Port don’t match if the ladder stays as it is now and the compo is pick 4. Nothing they get out of Geelong or the dogs will get close to that - especially with the dilution of the 1st round in 27 and 28 with Tasmania picks.
@EddieNap395@MapleDogs82 You can do that for 2 years then after 10 he is unrestricted free agent. Butters plays next year at the club he wants to be at. That is just the truth of it. You can dream if you like.
@EddieNap395@MapleDogs82 He puts some crazy number like $4 million for 1 year on his head knowing that when he gets to the club of his choice he extends for 9 more years at $11m flattening it out. to $15 over 10. No team
drafts him at price knowing he leaves after 1 year He gets to where he wants to go
@1116sen@SENBreakfast This is all true in a world where port can trade for the best deal
But in the AFL, Butters picks a team and Port get what they can get. He is uncontracted. Yes a free agent but he isn’t forced to sign with Port if they match. He can still demand a trade.
@JustinDimieri As @tommorris32 has said. If this was just about the pick GWS wanted the saints would have kept interest in Leek and picked him in the PSD. No other team was taking him at the $$$ term. Saints either don’t have the cap space anymore OR realised they were offering Leek way to much
@UEzy86@notmccreedy_@tommorris32 Buddarick is the Duryea replacement and if media is correct Leek wants 4 years @ $700-800k. That’s a lot for a depth player. We have JOD, Buss, Cleary Selwood and Walker on the list that can play third def plus Truck if needed. Personally I would keep Baku and play him in defence
