Women's Environmental Awareness Exhibition – "Journey of Survival"

The Journey of Survival exhibition has come to an end, but its impact will remain with me for a long time. What inspired me most was witnessing the remarkable creativity and dedication demonstrated by the participating women's associations. They transformed simple and recycled materials into impressive artistic models and powerful visual displays that reflected a profound understanding of the environmental challenges facing Aden, while showcasing women's ability to transform awareness into creativity, action, and meaningful impact.

My heartfelt appreciation goes to all the participating women's associations, who were not merely exhibitors but true partners in the success of this exhibition. Their outstanding work demonstrated that women are not only recipients of environmental awareness messages—they are creators of those messages, capable of leading community initiatives and inspiring others through art, innovation, and civic engagement.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to all the volunteers, partners, supporters, and every visitor who generously gave their time and interest to make this event a success.

This exhibition reaffirmed my belief that investing in community awareness, empowering women, and strengthening local partnerships is the most effective path toward protecting our environment and preserving our natural heritage.

Women's Environmental Awareness Exhibition "Journey of Survival" Launched in Aden to Promote Sea Turtle Conservation and Women's Empowerment

The activities of the women's environmental awareness exhibition "Journey of Survival" were officially launched on Monday afternoon at Aden Mall in the capital, Aden. The exhibition is organised by the Ruaa Centre for Strategic Studies, Consultancy and Training as part of the "Save the Sea Turtles in the Gulf of Aden" project, with support and funding from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the Small Grants Programme (SGP).

The opening ceremony was attended by Ms. Ishtiaq Mohammed Saad, Undersecretary for Women's Affairs in Aden, and Eng. Niazi Mustafa, Director General of the Environment Protection Authority in Aden, alongside government officials, representatives of civil society organisations, and environmental stakeholders.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Jaklin Al-Batani, President of Ruaa Centre, stated that the exhibition forms part of the Centre's ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental awareness while highlighting the vital role of women in protecting the environment, conserving sea turtles, and safeguarding their natural habitats. She emphasised that women are key partners in promoting environmental responsibility and encouraging community participation in the protection of natural resources.

Dr. Al-Batani added that the exhibition reflects the strong link between environmental conservation and women's economic and social empowerment by providing a platform for women's associations to showcase their handicrafts and home-based products, thereby supporting sustainable livelihoods and reinforcing the principles of sustainable development.

Running over two days, the exhibition aims to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting sea turtles, biodiversity, and coastal ecosystems, while encouraging environmentally responsible behaviour and highlighting women-led and community-based environmental initiatives.

The exhibition features the participation of several women's associations and civil society organisations, presenting handicrafts, traditional products, and home industries, alongside interactive educational displays covering the life cycle of sea turtles, the major threats they face, and the importance of reducing pollution and protecting coastal ecosystems.

Visitors toured the exhibition's various sections, where they explored environmental initiatives, community projects, and products reflecting the creativity and skills of local women and their contribution to supporting the local economy. The event attracted significant public interest and positive engagement from visitors.

The "Journey of Survival" exhibition is one of the flagship activities of the "Save the Sea Turtles in the Gulf of Aden" project, which seeks to enhance public awareness of the importance of protecting sea turtles and their habitats, strengthen community participation—particularly that of women—in biodiversity conservation and coastal environmental protection, and contribute to achieving sustainable development goals across the country.

World Sea Turtle Day – June 16

On the occasion of World Sea Turtle Day, Ruaa Center for Strategic Studies, Consulting and Training highlighted the importance of protecting sea turtles as one of the most significant marine species contributing to the health and sustainability of marine ecosystems.

The Center noted that sea turtles face increasing threats from plastic pollution, unsustainable fishing practices, habitat degradation, and climate change, all of which pose serious risks to their survival. It emphasized that conserving these species is essential for maintaining biodiversity and ensuring the long-term sustainability of marine resources.

Ruaa Center called on government institutions, environmental organizations, researchers, and local communities to strengthen conservation efforts, promote environmental awareness, and support initiatives aimed at protecting sea turtles and their nesting habitats along coastal areas.

The Center reaffirmed its commitment to supporting environmental sustainability and encouraging research and community engagement to safeguard marine life and preserve natural resources for future generations.

Women Leading Change for a Cleaner Coast

As part of ongoing efforts to protect Aden’s marine environment, Ruaa Center for Strategic Studies brought together women’s associations in Al-Buraiqah for a consultative meeting focused on environmental awareness, community partnership, and protecting endangered sea turtles.
The discussion spotlighted the growing threat of plastic pollution to marine life and explored ways to promote recycling, community engagement, and sustainable environmental initiatives led by local women’s groups.
Through the “Save the Turtles” initiative, the meeting reflected a shared commitment to safeguarding the coastal ecosystem and strengthening environmental responsibility within the community.

Supported by the GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), the project aims to inspire collective action toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for Aden’s coastline.

We have organized the “Turtles Friend” Environmental Art Competition, an inspiring initiative aimed at raising awareness among students about the importance of protecting marine turtles and preserving our marine ecosystem.

Through creativity and art, participating students expressed powerful messages about environmental responsibility and the role each of us can play in safeguarding marine life for future generations.

This competition reflects our commitment to combining education, awareness, and community engagement in support of environmental conservation.
