George Orwell’s 1984 was published today in 1949.
“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
It's 30°C in parts of Britain today. And the animals are struggling.☀️
Dairy cows in Cumbria are drinking twice as much water.
Milk yields are dropping.
Farmers are out there at 3am moving livestock to shade.
This isn't just a heatwave. This is another challenge for British farming.
The Irish government has already issued guidance - no transporting animals in the hottest part of the day.
What has the UK government said? Nothing new.
East of England just had one of the driest Aprils on record.
Crops already planted are failing.
This current hot spell is making everything worse.
A Lincolnshire arable farmer told the BBC his wheat is suffering.
That wheat becomes your bread.
Your pasta.
Your breakfast cereal.
One more week of this and thousands of acres of British crops will be written off.
Temperatures are rising. So are costs.
More water for livestock.
More diesel for ventilation.
More stress on the farmer.
The weather is getting harder. The government is getting quieter.
This isn’t to scaremonger, and it’s nothing British farmers haven’t weathered before (excuse the pun), just an opportunity to ask the question…
Is anyone in Westminster paying attention to what 32°C means for your food?
The older I get, the more I believe happiness lives in the ordinary. Pets. Plants. A quiet morning coffee. Blue sky. Cotton clouds. Birds singing. The gentle breeze through the trees. A clean, cosy house. Good food. Good hearted simple poeple. So much of life’s beauty is quiet, gentle, and already here. And somehow, one of the sweetest feelings is knowing I get to wake up and meet it all again tomorrow.
'We had the Conservatives who were consistently shit, whereas Labour are shit but faster'
Tim Shipman reads out a quote from Anoushka in Sowerby Bridge, sent in by a pollster, that "sums up what the British public think of the government at the moment".

The politics of a country in decline. Not a single word about wealth creation, without which none of this nonsense can be financed. It’s deeply pathetic. If people fall for this left-wing populist drivel we’ve ceased to be a serious country.

These aren’t bloggers. These aren’t permabulls.
When all three use the words “largest in history” on the same day —
The market should be listening.

I thank His Majesty King Charles III @RoyalFamily, the United Kingdom, and all valiant American hearts for this clarion call for unity in support of Ukraine across the Atlantic. This is exactly what is needed to bring dignified and lasting peace to Ukraine and all of Europe. The people of Ukraine deeply appreciate all the support provided by the United Kingdom and the United States. Thank you.
Anyone with a pulse should brace themselves. I am no fan of Starmer but he is the last man between Britain and full-fat socialism (Burnham, Rayner). They will raise borrowing and taxes and we’ll get to a depression quicker than you can say Laffer Curve.
A final piece of advice from Holly Butcher - written the day before she passed away from cancer at just 27:
“It’s a strange thing knowing you’re going to die young.
At 26, I thought I had time…
To fall in love.
Start a family.
Grow old.
But cancer doesn’t care about plans.
Now, I understand how fragile life really is. Every single day is a gift, not a guarantee.
I’m not writing this to scare you. I’m writing to remind you: really live.
Stop stressing over little things. Be kind to your body- move it, nourish it, stop criticizing it. One day you’ll wish you had appreciated it.
Go outside.
Look at the sky.
Feel the sun.
Just be.
Spend less time chasing “stuff” - more time making memories. Don’t skip moments with people you love.
Laugh more.
Write a note.
Tell someone you love them.
Complain less.
Give more.
Helping others brings more joy than anything you can buy.
Be present.
Put your phone down.
Show up - really show up.
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need a perfect body, or a perfect life.
Just follow what makes your heart light up. Say no to what drains you. Make changes when you need to.
And please - donate blood. I wouldn’t have had that extra year without it. And that year gave me memories I’ll hold close… forever.
Thank you for reading this.
Live your life well.
And maybe… we’ll meet again someday.”

UAE to Trump Administration: "You started this war; if we run short of USDs as a result of it, either you will give us USD swap lines, or we will be forced to start transacting oil and gas in CNY and other currencies."

To sum up the day. The Strait of Hormuz is still not open unless vessels go through the Iranian tollbooth, the U.S. naval blockade of Iran continues, and the dramatic decline in oil prices is caused not by the changing reality on the ground but by market expectations — possibly over-optimistic — that the U.S. and Iran will strike a nuclear deal in the foreseeable future.
