Gunmen have kidnapped dozens of innocent school pupils in Borno State, and you said it’s the North. They came for hardworking farmers in Zamfara, you said it’s the North. They came for helpless children in Kaduna, you still said it’s the North and that they want to destabilize El-Rufai. They came for innocent Christian worshippers peacefully gathered in Jos, you said it��s the Middle Belt.

Now they have come for the Southwest, a region we all believed was a safe haven, different from the rest. Now we are broken, we are hopeless. Who will rise up and fight for us?

Abdul Samad Toyin is only four years old. Precious Idowu Taiwo is four years old and some days. Innocent Christianah Akanbi is just two years old. These are somebody’s beloved children. These are babies who should be playing, laughing and growing up in safety. Also think about the fathers, mothers, uncles and siblings who were torn away from their families in Ekiti State just some days ago.

Even the teachers who dedicated their lives to shaping the future of our children are not spared. In Oyo State, the beloved Mrs. Rachel Alamu, a school principal who showed up every day to educate our children, was kidnapped. The assistant headmaster, Joel Adesina, was shot while bravely trying to protect his students. And the most heartbreaking and horrifying of all is the brutal beheading of the mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, live on screen for the whole world to see. How will his devastated wife and traumatized children ever find peace again? How do you look his family in the eyes?

This did not start today, and we can no longer afford to look away. Some of these people went to school and never returned home to their family. We need to rise up as a nation and put an end to this insecurity with our votes. We need to vote bad governance out. We need to speak out loudly and boldly for those who no longer can. If you choose to remain silent today, tomorrow it could be your father, your mother, your children, or even you yourself in that position.

Please get your PVC and vote for whoever you truly believe will protect this nation, defend its people and save us from this endless cycle of pain and loss. Our children deserve to grow up in safety. Nigeria deserves so much better than this.
