The volume of a classroom should never be an indicator of the quality of the teacher. Loud classrooms are not necessarily managed poorly and quiet ones don’t always mean students are engaged. It’s about accountable talk.
A year ago, a non-academic friend listened to a talk I gave. I thought it went great. My friend disagreed.
She said that academics are experts at making interesting stuff boring—and that we should all take a speech class.
So I did. And here are 6 most useful things I learned.
Relatable content will boost engagement at an exponential rate. If will also make it easier to grasp concepts if they truly understand what they’re analyzing.
@DelandreaHall I’ve used rap. Eminem’s “eight mile” uses iambic pentameter. I did an exercise where I mixed up Shakespearean quotes and rap quotes and had them guess which was which. They were floored!

If teachers were paid a professional wage and treated professionally, we wouldn't need incentives to even get new teachers into the classroom or to keep current teachers. Pay, resources and respect are solely lacking.
