Between 1821 and 1823, a brutal newspaper war was fought between The Calcutta Journal headed by James Silk Buckingham and "John Bull in the East" headed by Reverend Samuel Bryce. The conservative John Bull hated the progressive Calcutta Journal and what it stood for.
James Silk Buckingham, the editor of the Calcutta Journal was one of the first journalists in the history of Indian journalism to be slut shamed by rival newspapers.
