The areas you're referring have always stayed Catholic. The Republic was rather tolerant for that time although public display and catholic mass/churches were still forbidden. Catholics in those days (1800-1900) also had a higher birth rate so they were able to preserve their local dominance there.

We don't have free healthcare in the EU since it's part of the budget in most EU countries. The primary differences are in the system itself. For example: The US spent 14.885 USD per person in 2024. Most EU countries are in the range of 4.000-8.000 USD per person all while life expectancy is considerable higher in the EU.

I'm in merchant shipping for 25 years and believe me the markets are just having a good laugh. The chance of taking a hit is huge and actually already happened. So the pricing of the war risk premiums should be substantial not alone for the vessel but especially for the cargo including potential risk for environmental damage & clean ups etc. Vessel insurance value is roughly between 40-150 million USD depending on type and age but cargo claims, environmental claims and clean up including litigation could be 1 billion or more.

But what point often missed is in these kind of accusations is that Europe is already very vulnerable for any price hikes related to energy since it turned away from cheap Russian gas. Now the MAGA-US is demanding we participate in a war that could possibly cause a huge energy crisis. We were not informed about the attack and in order to behave like a good boy we need to weave the gallows rope ourselves and put it around our neck. This war is completely against Europe's own interest. I have sympathy for the Iranian people but I just don't think the outcome of this war is going to change anything good for them based on the US, and to be honest the EU, track record these last 3 decades.
