Alcohol: A Counterfeit Social Currency

When I was younger, alcohol felt like the key to unlocking friendship, fun, and connection. I wanted to be the social bank - supplying drinks kept me feeling included and liked.

In reality, alcohol was a counterfeit social currency. Those relationships never felt real or ran deep. My "friends" only valued me for the access to booze or party invites I provided.

Underneath it all, I was terrified of rejection and being alone. I masked my insecurity with bravado and bottles. My desire for acceptance was so overpowering that I settled for fairweather drinking buddies.

"Better to drink with assholes than drink alone" became my motto. I confused rowdy nights for bonding and sloppy bar chat for friendship. As long as I kept the drinks flowing, I never had to confront my loneliness.

In getting sober, I was forced to build relationships based on true understanding, not liquor. I found a connection through shared passions and values rather than happy hours and drink specials.

Don't let alcohol be your social crutch. Face your fears of rejection head-on. You'll discover that connection, like sobriety, flows from within. Invest in friendships rooted in who you are, not what you drink.
