Happy Neurodiversity Celebration Week! 🌈
Taking a strengths-based approach to supporting neurodivergent learners doesn’t mean that the barriers to learning are dismissed.
If anything, it recognises we can’t discuss strengths without also talking about getting the right support.
✨ Logical thinking thrives when we offer the safety of structure and predictability.
✨Hyperfocus is a gift, provided we grant time and flexibility.
✨Resilience isn't an infinite resource. It must be protected with quiet spaces, time to unmask, fiddle, move around, and the freedom to simply be amongst others who understand you.
✨Creativity and passion flourish in school when we offer greater autonomy and expand definitions and criteria for success.
✨Honesty and moral conviction carry an emotional weight. When the actions of others in the world feel overwhelmingly unjust, it’s important to acknowledge that it can be draining to process.
Let’s also not forget that;
Not all neurodivergent children have “spiky” profiles.
Not all will feel like they have “superpowers.”
But, as professionals working in education, we can still help them feel like heroes.
