They cried foul when #SMU decided to beat them at their own game in the 1980s. They lowered their heads and stayed silent when SMU took the Penalty for something we were all doing. They used state/public resources to keep us out of 90s realignment. They stuck together to keep us from joining their club for 20 years.

They joked. They laughed. They pointed. They continued to lobby against us. One even took the coach they laughed about when he was on our sidelines. They took the players they once said weren't good enough. They decided to stop playing us because the risk was too great. We had beaten them twice -- in their own stadium. It was critical they keep us down because they saw what happened once and knew deep down it could happen again. It was an existential crisis.

And now here we are, conference champs in the American and headed to the ACC.

They still force a laugh while their buddies are watching. They look both ways before taking a step. They sleep with one eye open.

They lose players to us now. They stumble and mumble and fumble their way through conversation thinking it's like the old times when they could keep SMU down. In reality it's like the old times alright, but more like the 1980s when SMU tired of losing and responded with force, ferocity, and finances.

SMU has the commitment, the resources, the leadership, the location and the appetite to win and win big in major college football.

They know it, and they don't like it. They point to what was instead of what will be. They know it doesn't have a happy ending for them, regardless of what conference we (or they) will be in.

They continue to sleep with one eye open because they know who's knocking and they don't want to answer the door. It's too late. SMU is inside and we're hunting.

We've burned the ships behind us because we're not going back. We move forward, hunting for breath that once spoke against us. We'll pull them from their hiding places. We'll move them to the light and show their faces. And we'll beat them. And beat them. And beat them again.

At their own game.

We're not going back.
