Successive governments failed to stop the boats because they were trying to fix the symptoms, not the cause.
If people know they can stay and claim benefits, they’ll keep coming. If they know they’ll be removed, they won’t come.
We must change the incentives.
That’s why the Conservative Borders Plan leaves the ECHR, giving us the power to ban asylum claims from illegal entrants, and remove new arrivals within a week.
That’s why we will make it harder for non-citizens to claim welfare and housing benefits.
And that’s why we will restrict ILR and citizenship.
This is common sense. And this how we will take back control of our borders for good.
🚍📉 Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is out celebrating the £2 bus fare cap this morning as if it’s some groundbreaking victory for working people.
Let’s be clear: the Labour Party deliberately raised it to £3 from January 2025. Now, 18 months later, they’re reversing their own decision and calling it progress.
Another U-turn sold as triumph. They really do think we have no memory.
In the last few hours alone Andy Burnham’s Government has talked about:
Cutting energy bills
Lifting the personal tax allowance
Nationalising Thames Water
The biggest council house programme since the War
Giving mayors more funding
Creating a new National Care Service
More overseas aid
Cutting student loan repayments
More employment support
Ending homelessness
These are billions of pounds of spending commitments and that's on top of raising defence spending to 3%.
Where’s the money coming from?
There’s been no serious explanation at all of how they will be funded. I am very concerned the Prime Minister is making a lot of promises without giving the country an explanation about how we can afford them.
We cannot borrow even more - we are paying more in debt interest than we do on defence.
The answer can’t be tax rises either. The tax burden is already far too high, and families and businesses shouldn’t face even higher bills.
The only answer is to cut spending. Andy Burnham should be in Parliament explaining what his actual plans are and how he is going to pay for them.
This is a charade. A political pantomime from Burnham.
We @Conservatives had an opposition debate tomorrow to vote that parliament sit JUST ONE extra day to ask the new PM questions about his plans
Labour just cancelled the debate😡
Burnham is hiding from the press and now MPs
Aren’t you the minister for safeguarding women against violence?
And you have to apologise for what you tweeted after a fellow female politician was violently murdered?
Isn’t that a resigning matter?
Killers, rapists & sex offenders will be among up to 6,000 criminals freed early from prison from September as a result of Labour’s new inappropriately named Sentencing Act - which should be renamed the Reduced Sentencing & Get Out of Jail Act.
There is something about the delight that Bridget Phillipson takes in this cruel & unnecessary policy that is particularly sinister. Only 2 other countries in the whole world tax education, God I hope Andy Burnham gets shot of her.
You are a spiteful class warrior destroying children’s lives with an ideological tax no other developed country imposes on education.
You didn’t “end tax breaks.” You slapped VAT on school fees for the first time in history, shut over 100 schools, made thousands of teachers redundant, and displaced vulnerable SEND kids who relied on specialist private provision.
Your own “record investment” claim is already falling apart. Teacher numbers are down, class sizes are up.
Stop playing the working-class victim while waging war on aspiration and parental choice. The only one gaslighting here is you.
You thin-skinned entitled madam!!
You're a senior Minister of the Crown - you should yourself be more dignified than this.
And you should be too damn busy to care.
👇👇🤬🤬🇬🇧🇬🇧
@jessicaelgot@Hush64329919 Phillipson is spiteful, it’s the perfect word to describe the delight she takes in imposing VAT on independent schools. Only 3 countries in the world tax education, it was an appalling thing to do, and she can’t stop gloating about it.
If an MP shows this level of disrespect to the Monarch, Parliament and the oath they swore, they shouldn't be an MP.
MPs are elected to represent the British people, not to make a mockery of the office they hold.
I find it incredible the Speaker allowed it.
You can cross your fingers all you want.
You are still a Member of the British Parliament, under a British monarch.
If you hate it that much, don’t take your seat like Sinn Fein.
