The USS New Jersey was an Iowa-class battleship and one of the last battleships commissioned by the United States Navy. She was also among the most advanced battleships ever built at the time, rivaled only by the Japanese Empire Yamato-class battleships.

Throughout her career, New Jersey served with distinction in every conflict she participated in, even during an era when aircraft carriers had already replaced battleships as the dominant force at sea. As one of the few battleships that remained in active service, she continued to provide invaluable naval gunfire support until the U.S. government ultimately decided that the ship had more than fulfilled her duty.

She was finally decommissioned and preserved as a museum ship, a role she continues to serve today after becoming one of the most decorated and longest-serving capital ships in U.S. Navy history.

In Azur Lane, New Jersey is the "Indomitable Black Dragon" of the Eagle Union, one of the faction's greatest trump cards and one of the most powerful characters in both the game's lore and its gameplay, despite having been released five years ago.

New Jersey is a rather extroverted girl with apparently inexhaustible social energy. She expresses her opinions without filters and projects an unmistakable aura of confidence that is more than justified thanks to her personality, power, and firm determination not to fall behind the next generation of warships in an era that has decided ships like her are a thing of the past.

In that sense, this portrayal fully honors the reputation USS New Jersey earned during her years of service as one of the foremost symbols of American naval power.

The relationship she has with the Commander is, to describe it as precisely as possible, a "clingy wife" simulator in the most literal sense of the expression.

It is customary for the shipgirls to address the Commander in different ways. Some simply call him "Commander", others add honorifics such as "-kun", some use possessive expressions like "my Commander", while others choose more extravagant titles such as "Champion".

At the beginning of their relationship, New Jersey addresses him simply as "Commander". Although this still preserves a degree of formality, her playful and mischievous personality is already apparent in the way she interacts with him.

As their bond deepens, she becomes increasingly flirtatious, frequently ending her sentences with "Don'tcha", an informal contraction of "don't you?". This small linguistic quirk of hers may be subtle, but it reinforces her carefree and outgoing nature, giving her dialogue a uniquely casual charm.

When New Jersey marries him, that "Don'tcha" almost completely disappears from her usual dialogues and is instead replaced by the noun she uses with the Commander, which has become synonymous with her character: "Honey".

That "Don'tcha" largely disappears not because New Jersey has become more formal, but because the playful distance it implied is no longer necessary once their relationship has become firmly established.

This marks the moment when playful teasing ceases to define their relationship. After oathing her, New Jersey's interactions are framed primarily by the comfort and certainty of someone treating the Commander as her lifelong partner.

This is where we can say the "clingy wife" simulator truly begins.

New Jersey constantly seeks the Commander's attention and has absolutely no reservations about letting the entire port know just how much he means to her.

Unlike other shipgirls who are more reserved or tend to communicate their feelings through riddles, subtle hints, indirect comments, or double meanings.

The charm of New Jersey lies precisely in the absence of all that. She is strong and equally vehement in expressing her feelings.

It is such a unique combination within the game that it has not been diluted with the passing of the years as more characters have been released after her.

We have had characters who have been affectionate, self-confident, or jokey, but there are few who have maintained that consistent and shameless attitude of "I am your wife and I am going to behave as such in front of everyone" that has so characterized New Jersey.

That emotional transparency is, in my opinion, one of the main reasons she has remained so beloved for many of us even five years after her release. New Jersey stands out because she is emotionally uncomplicated rather than simple.

I use the term "clingy" to describe her, but I don't mean it in a bad way.

Very often, that expression is used to describe someone who is constantly attached to their partner and seems incapable of living an independent life unless their partner is involved, usually motivated by anxiety or insecurity, often becoming bothersome or even developing into a toxic dependency that damages the relationship.

There is a huge difference between someone who constantly seeks their partner's company because they are afraid of being alone and someone who does so simply because they genuinely enjoy expressing their affection in an open and enthusiastic way.

There is no insecurity in the way she drapes herself over the Commander in public, no fear that the other shipgirls will take him away if she isn't constantly visible. She simply likes being next to her husband and assumes everyone else should find that normal.

I think it's important to remark that distinction, and it's also why I think truly defines New Jersey's relationship with the Commander.

Her overflowing affection is just the natural expression of a happily married woman who knows she's spending time with her beloved husband.
